美国纽伯瑞儿童文学奖的由来:
1713年,纽伯瑞出生在英国农家。他是自学成才的儿童文学作家和出版家。
1744年他编写并出版了世界上第一本专门的、价格低廉的儿童书——《美丽小书》,并开办了世界上第一家专门的儿童读物印刷厂、世界上第一家专门的儿童书店,从此他不断改进,印刷发行了许多精美的儿童图书,深受儿童喜欢,由於他打破当时保守的风气,崇尚的「快乐至上」的儿童教育观念,开辟英美儿童文学之路,所以後人称纽柏瑞为——儿童文学之父,纽柏瑞的贡献对於儿童文学,可以说是个重要的里程碑。
为了表彰和纪念纽伯瑞在艰苦卓绝中对欧美儿童文学的开创之功,1922年,美国图书馆学会(American Library Association - ALA)的分支机构—— 美国图书馆儿童服务学会(Association for Library Service to Children - ALSC) 创设了纽伯瑞儿童文学奖(The Newbery Medal for Best Children's Book)。得奖者必须是对美国儿童文学有杰出贡献者,并以美国公民及永久居民为限,并入选青少年必读书目。自1922年起每年颁发给前一年度最杰出的美国儿童图书作者。它与“国际安徒生奖”齐名。“纽伯瑞奖”每年颁发一次,专门奖励上一年度出版的英语儿童文学优秀作品。每年颁发金奖(Medal)一部、银奖(Honor Books)一部或数部。这一奖项设立以来,获奖作品的规模和水准,已是举世公认的事实。
