Titanic Disaster, only 711 saved The Titanic’s maiden voyage, from England to New York, across the Atlantic Ocean was a tragedy. It hit the iceberg at 11:40pm, April15, 1912 and sank at 2:20am, April 15, 1912,. 1,517 people perished and 711 saved by the Carpathia,. Ismay was found, and Captain Smith perished. At 11:40 pm, when the two lookouts saw the iceberg, the ship turned but itwas too late. The side of the hull hit the icebergand the rivets, which hold the steel plates together, popped out and water rushed in. It flooded in six compartments. The bow started sinking and the stern started to rise. At 12:15 am, Titanic sent the SOS signal to Carpathia andstarted lowering lifeboats. After twentylifeboats were lowered, the Titanic snapped into two pieces and sank. Why did the ship sink? There were many reasons. First was the weather. It was too calm with no waves splashing against the iceberg, so they could not see it. Anotherreason is that the lookouts couldn’t find theirbinoculars, so theysaw the iceberg when it was too late. The third reason is that the radiooperator didn’t listen to the ice warning, so they didn’t slow down. The most important oneis that the ship didn’t have enough lifeboats for everyone, so many people diedduring the disaster.
