在我看来,和娃一起分级阅读时,遇到一个新的英语单词,家长直接用中文翻译,是一种“偷懒行为”。
道理很简单,一个英语国家的孩子学分级阅读的时候,他/她如果不认识一个词,家长无非通过:1)实物/图片;2)动作表演;3)用孩子学过的其它更简单的词来想办法描述这个词;4)以后想办法再解释。不存在通过另一种“语言”帮助孩子去理解这个词的short cut。
既然是分级阅读,那么只要分级阅读的level选对了,意味着和孩子现有水平匹配,完全可以、也应该做到全程不用中文,单纯地用英文+图片去解释故事。我摸索了一段时间,发现完全可以做到,相信很多家长也一样可以做到。
举几个和我家娃玩的例子:
1)RAZ有个故事,we learn to paddle。娃问我,daddy, what is paddle? 我先指着图里小男孩打水的样子,然后用手夸张地模仿打水的样子,说this is paddling. 娃被我逗的咯咯笑,我顺势把她抱在怀里,让她模仿脚蹬水的样子,夸张地发出splash splosh的声响逗她玩。晚上洗澡时,她在澡盆里突然一翻身并蹬腿,把水花溅的很高,说dadday, look, I am paddling。我就明白她完全理解这个动词了。
2)3L里有一课,讲Professor Boffin. 念到这里时,娃问我,daddy, what is professor?我说,a professor is a teacher who is very senior and old(然后装出很老的样子), like your grandpa. Look at Professor Boffin, is he old? 娃点点头说,Yes he is very old. 过了几秒,她又说, Miss Williams is very young, so she is a teacher, not a professor! 虽然我知道我的解释很不准确,但我很开心我用娃能理解的英文,帮她理解了新的英文。因为我知道,如果我说了“教授”,看起来解释了,其实跟什么都没解释一样,因为4岁的娃不可能真正理解“教授”是什么意思,还不如索性让她模模糊糊地用teacher理解了professor。
3)3L里有一课,讲(the medicine) tastes like poison. 娃问我, daddy, what is poison? 我说, do you remember Princess Snow White? The Queen gave her a red apple, and there was some poison on it. Snow White ate it and then Errr....然后顺势做出倒在地板上的姿势。娃马上用中文说,爸爸我知道啦,是毒吗?(因为她很小就听过中文版的白雪公主)。我继续用英文说,yes, a poison is very very poisonous, and it can kill people(做出抹脖子的动作). Do you remember the Gruffalo? (刚好娃上学期在幼儿园学了俗称“英文版《狐假虎威》的"The Gruffalo"咕噜牛绘本)What does Gruffalo have at the end of his nose? Yes, a poisonous wart at the end of his nose. 娃满意地点点头,马上跑去又让我给她再念一遍The Gruffalo了:)
