一、A字母系列
1. arrange v. 安排；布置
I’ve arranged anappointment with the dentist. 我已经和牙医约好了时间。 Arrange the desk so that you don’t face the door. 把桌子摆好，这样你就不会面对着门了。 I think we should arrange our schedule properly. 我认为我们应该适当地安排日程。
2. amusement n. 娱乐，消遣
形容词：amusing adj.使人感到有趣的 I went to Jinjiang Amusement Park with my friendsat the weekend. 周末我和朋友们一起去锦江乐园玩了。 How amusing it is! 这多么有趣啊！
3. audience n.观众，听众 Do you dare to speak before a big audience? 你敢在一大群观众面前讲话吗？
4. avoid v. 避免，避开
Please drive carefully to avoidtraffic accidents. 请小心驾驶以免发生交通事故。
5. ambition n. 野心，雄心 形容词：ambitious adj. 野心勃勃的 It was his ambition to earn a million dollars before he turned 30. 他的野心是在30岁之前挣到一百万美元。 He has always been ambitious. 他一直都野心勃勃。
6. afford v. 买得起（及物动词） afford sth.
Can we afford a new car? 我们能买得起一辆新车吗？
7. advise v. 建议，劝告 advise sb. to do sth.
advice n. 建议，忠告 Dentists advise you to check your teeth every sixmonths. 牙医建议大家每六个月检查一次牙齿。
8. adventure n. 冒险 It is a story of a brave man’s adventure. 这是一个勇敢者的冒险故事。
9. attract v.吸引 形容词：attractive adj. 有吸引力的 She tried to attract myattention. 她试图引起我的注意。 He is young, intelligent and attractive. 他年轻聪明又有魅力。
10. automatic adj. 自动的 automobile n. 汽车 My camera has manual and automaticfunctions. 我的相机有手调和自动两种功能。 Bob demonstrated them how to drive a new kind ofautomobile. Bob向他们展示了如何驾驶一种新型汽车。
11. awful adj. 可怕的 副词：awfully adv. 可怕地，非常地 I just had the most awful dream. 我刚做了一个最可怕的梦。 It’s an awfully good(bad)story. 这是一个非常好（坏）的故事。
12. apologize v. 道歉 名词：apology n. 道歉 We apologize for thedelay of the train. 我们为火车的误点表示歉意。 I accept your apology. 我接受你的道歉。
13. ancient adj. 古老的
Tai Chi is an ancient form of self-defense. 太极是一种古老的自卫术。
14. article n. 文章
Her article is a discussion of the researchmethods. 她这篇文章论述了几种研究方法。
15. amazing adj. 令人惊讶的 动词：amaze v. 使人惊奇 It’s amazing how it grows! 这是多么惊人的成长！ He amazed us by his knowledge of history. 他对于历史的知识令我们吃惊。
16. accurate adj. 精确的 名词：accuracy n. 精确 Accurate measurement is very important in science. 科学领域精确的测量非常重要。 They questioned theaccuracy of the information in the file. 他们质疑档案中信息的准确性。
17. advertisement n. 广告 commercial 商业性的广告 advertisement 泛指广告（包括公益广告等）
18. alarm n. 闹钟；警报 timer n. 计时器 I set my alarm clockfor 5:30. 我把闹钟定在5:30. Put the chicken in the oven when the timer goes off. 当定时器响起时，把鸡肉放进烤箱。
19. achieve v. 达到；获得 名词：achievement n. 成就；达到 （通常指经过很努力的过程获得的成就） It was aremarkable achievement for such a young player. 如此年轻的选手有这样的成绩真是了不起。
20. assistant n. 助手 动词：assist v. 帮助，辅助 She works asa teaching assistant. 她担任助教。 Anyone willingto assist can contact this number. 凡是愿意帮助的人可以联系这个号码。
21. attitude n. 态度 A positive attitude isimportant if you want to be successful. 如果你想成功，积极的态度是很重要的。 Scientists have a negative attitude to the theory. 科学家们对这个理论的态度是相当消极的。
22. available adj. 可用的，可得到的 I’m not available this afternoon because I have anappointment with the dentist. 我今天下午没空，因为和牙医有约。 This is the only room available. 这是唯一可用的房间。 All the options arecurrently available. 所有的方案现在都可选择。
23. award n. 奖励 reward n. 回报 He was nominated forthe best actor award. 他获得最佳演员奖提名。 My grandmother says a gooddeed is its own reward. 我奶奶说，做好事本身就是一种回报。
24. argue v. 争论 debate n.& v. 辩论（有来有回，按照一定规则的） Some scientists argue（表明观点，替代think） that the death penalty shouldbe restored. 有些科学家主张恢复死刑。 Television is now animportant forum for political debate. 电视已成了政治辩论的重要擂台。
