Why I Am Leaving Goldman Sachs

Greg Smith is resigning today as a Goldman Sachs executive director and head of the firm’s United States equity derivatives business in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Greg Smith

Today is my last day at Goldman Sachs. After almost 12 years at the firm — first as a summer intern while at Stanford, then in New York for 10 years, and now in London — I believe I have worked here long enough to understand the trajectory of its culture, its people and its identity. And I can honestly say that the environment now is as toxic and destructive as I have ever seen it.

To put the problem in the simplest terms, the interests of the client continue to be sidelined in the way the firm operates and thinks about making money. Goldman Sachs is one of the world’s largest and most important investment banks and it is too integral to global finance to continue to act this way. The firm has veered so far from the place I joined right out of college that I can no longer in good conscience say that I identify with what it stands for.

It might sound surprising to a skeptical public, but culture was always a vital part of Goldman Sachs’s success. It revolved around teamwork, integrity, a spirit of humility, and always doing right by our clients. The culture was the secret sauce that made this place great and allowed us to earn our clients’ trust for 143 years. It wasn’t just about making money; this alone will not sustain a firm for so long. It had something to do with pride and belief in the organization. I am sad to say that I look around today and see virtually no trace of the culture that made me love working for this firm for many years. I no longer have the pride, or the belief.

But this was not always the case. For more than a decade I recruited and mentored candidates through our grueling interview process. I was selected as one of 10 people (out of a firm of more than 30,000) to appear on our recruiting video, which is played on every college campus we visit around the world. In 2006 I managed the summer intern program in sales and trading in New York for the 80 college students who made the cut, out of the thousands who applied.

I knew it was time to leave when I realized I could no longer look students in the eye and tell them what a great place this was to work.

When the history books are written about Goldman Sachs, they may reflect that the current chief executive officer, Lloyd C. Blankfein, and the president, Gary D. Cohn, lost hold of the firm’s culture on their watch. I truly believe that this decline in the firm’s moral fiber represents the single most serious threat to its long-run survival.

Over the course of my career I have had the privilege of advising two of the largest hedge funds on the planet, five of the largest asset managers in the United States, and three of the most prominent sovereign wealth funds in the Middle East and Asia. My clients have a total asset base of more than a trillion dollars. I have always taken a lot of pride in advising my clients to do what I believe is right for them, even if it means less money for the firm. This view is becoming increasingly unpopular at Goldman Sachs. Another sign that it was time to leave.

How did we get here? The firm changed the way it thought about leadership. Leadership used to be about ideas, setting an example and doing the right thing. Today, if you make enough money for the firm (and are not currently an ax murderer) you will be promoted into a position of influence.

What are three quick ways to become a leader? a) Execute on the firm’s “axes,” which is Goldman-speak for persuading your clients to invest in the stocks or other products that we are trying to get rid of because they are not seen as having a lot of potential profit. b) “Hunt Elephants.” In English: get your clients — some of whom are sophisticated, and some of whom aren’t — to trade whatever will bring the biggest profit to Goldman. Call me old-fashioned, but I don’t like selling my clients a product that is wrong for them. c) Find yourself sitting in a seat where your job is to trade any illiquid, opaque product with a three-letter acronym.

Today, many of these leaders display a Goldman Sachs culture quotient of exactly zero percent. I attend derivatives sales meetings where not one single minute is spent asking questions about how we can help clients. It’s purely about how we can make the most possible money off of them. If you were an alien from Mars and sat in on one of these meetings, you would believe that a client’s success or progress was not part of the thought process at all.

It makes me ill how callously people talk about ripping their clients off. Over the last 12 months I have seen five different managing directors refer to their own clients as “muppets,” sometimes over internal e-mail. Even after the S.E.C., Fabulous Fab, Abacus, God’s work, Carl Levin, Vampire Squids? No humility? I mean, come on. Integrity? It is eroding. I don’t know of any illegal behavior, but will people push the envelope and pitch lucrative and complicated products to clients even if they are not the simplest investments or the ones most directly aligned with the client’s goals? Absolutely. Every day, in fact.

It astounds me how little senior management gets a basic truth: If clients don’t trust you they will eventually stop doing business with you. It doesn’t matter how smart you are.

These days, the most common question I get from junior analysts about derivatives is, “How much money did we make off the client?” It bothers me every time I hear it, because it is a clear reflection of what they are observing from their leaders about the way they should behave. Now project 10 years into the future: You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that the junior analyst sitting quietly in the corner of the room hearing about “muppets,” “ripping eyeballs out” and “getting paid” doesn’t exactly turn into a model citizen.

When I was a first-year analyst I didn’t know where the bathroom was, or how to tie my shoelaces. I was taught to be concerned with learning the ropes, finding out what a derivative was, understanding finance, getting to know our clients and what motivated them, learning how they defined success and what we could do to help them get there.

My proudest moments in life — getting a full scholarship to go from South Africa to Stanford University, being selected as a Rhodes Scholar national finalist, winning a bronze medal for table tennis at the Maccabiah Games in Israel, known as the Jewish Olympics — have all come through hard work, with no shortcuts. Goldman Sachs today has become too much about shortcuts and not enough about achievement. It just doesn’t feel right to me anymore.

I hope this can be a wake-up call to the board of directors. Make the client the focal point of your business again. Without clients you will not make money. In fact, you will not exist. Weed out the morally bankrupt people, no matter how much money they make for the firm. And get the culture right again, so people want to work here for the right reasons. People who care only about making money will not sustain this firm — or the trust of its clients — for very much longer.

In a speech to mark the 60th anniversary of her accession to the throne, she also paid a rare public tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh, her “constant strength and guide”. Speaking in Westminster Hall, the oldest part of the Palace of Westminster, the Queen said the setting was a reminder of Britain’s history and “national story”.

To mark her Diamond Jubilee, MPs and peers have paid for a new stained-glass window for the 900-year-old hall, comprising her coat of arms.

“I have been privileged to witness some of that history and, with the support of my family, rededicate myself to the service of our great country and its people now and in the years to come.” Her words were widely interpreted as a signal of the 85 year-old’s determination to remain on the throne for the rest of her life.

As the Queen pointed out, she is only the second monarch to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee. Queen Victoria reigned for 63 years, the longest-serving monarch.

Members of the Royal family have said that the Duke’s unwavering support has been essential to the Queen’s reign, but the couple themselves discuss their union only rarely. The Queen yesterday broke that habit with a warm joke about her husband’s irascible public persona.

The Queen’s speeches to Parliament are usually written by the Government, but yesterday’s address was personal, and included gentle jokes about the many politicians she had seen come and go.

“As today, it was my privilege to address you during my Silver and Golden Jubilees. Many of you were present 10 years ago and some of you will recall the occasion in 1977,” she said.

Smiling, she added: “Since my accession, I have been a regular visitor to the Palace of Westminster and, at the last count, have had the pleasurable duty of treating with 12 prime ministers.”

Laughter spread through the hall as her audience realised that her choice of the word “pleasurable” may not have been altogether serious.

In combinatorics, Ramsey's theorem states that in any colouring of the edges of a sufficiently large complete graph, one will find monochromatic complete subgraphs. For 2 colours, Ramsey's theorem states that for any pair of positiveintegers (r,s), there exists a least positive integer R(r,s) such that for any complete graph on R(r,s) vertices, whose edges are coloured red or blue, there exists either a complete subgraph on r vertices which is entirely blue, or a complete subgraph on s vertices which is entirely red. Here R(r,s) signifies an integer that depends on both r and s. It is understood to represent the smallest integer for which the theorem holds.

由此推测(this led to the speculation that),其服务器被入侵时间为2010年7月前。

Two male nurses face murder charges in Uruguay after reportedly admitting to killing at least 16 patients in two hospitals in the country's capital.

One of the men has been charged with five aggravated homicides, while the other has been charged with 11 aggravated homicides, Judge Rolando Vomero said in an interview Sunday with CNN affiliate Teledoce, noting that the two men appeared to have acted independently of each other. Authorities are also charging a woman as being an accomplice in one of the killings, he said.

According to the authorities, the two male nurses, ages 39 and 46, both said they killed the patients because they did not want to see them suffer.

"My client is fully conscious of his actions. He fully confessed in front of the judge (and) prosecutor, and his defense is that he did it out of mercy," said attorney Ines Massiotti. The nurses wanted to relieve patients' pain, attorney Santiago Clavijo said. "It wasn't a vicious operation in the spirit of death," he told reporters.

But apparently not all those killed were terminally ill. One patient had their discharge order signed one day before his death, said Interior Minister Eduardo Bonomi.

The killings took place at the hospitals of Maciel and La Espanola in Montevideo. One of the men worked in the neurosurgery department at La Espanola; the other worked in that same department, as well as in the cardiology ward at Maciel.

The police had been investigating suspicious deaths of patients at the hospitals for weeks after a tip from a worker at Maciel.

A recent death prompted the police to accelerate proceedings and provided them with enough evidence to make the arrests, Bonomi said.Authorities say they believe the nurses killed the patients either by administering a morphine overdose or by injecting air bubbles into their blood stream.

The government has set up an office to provide support to the families of the victims, said Health Minister Jorge Venegas.

1. Fry an egg — in several hours over very easy.

2. Cook a romantic dinner.

3. Melt chocolate for strawberry dipping.

4. Fake a fever Ferris Bueller style.

5. As a heating pad to relieve iPad Shoulder.

6. Keeping your coffee warm.

7. Distract Predator.

8. Signal for rescue – better thermal image signal.

9. Prevent hypothermia.

10. Warm up the colonoscopy instruments.

11. Puppy warmer.

Starbucks unveiled a new energy drink line March 22, 2012. Starbucks Refreshers, available now in select areas, come in three different flavors and are made with fruit juice and green coffee extract.

Starbucks announced plans Thursday to expand into the fast-growing energy drink industry, unveiling a new line of Refreshers carbonated beverages.

The energy drinks, which are available now in select retail and grocery stores, come in three flavors: raspberry pomegranate, orange melon and strawberry lemonade.

In addition to fruit juice, the carbonated drink uses green coffee extract, but has no coffee taste. The 12-ounce cans contain 60 calories, Starbucks said in a press release.

In February, Bob Zoellick, the current President of the World Bank, announced that he would be stepping down at the end of his term in June. Bob has been a strong and effective leader at the bank for the last five years, and when he told me about his plans, I immediately began to search for someone to fill his shoes.

Now, despite its name, the World Bank is more than just a bank. It’s one of the most powerful tools we have to reduce poverty and raise standards of living in some of the poorest countries on the planet. And in a world that is growing smaller and more connected every day, that’s a critical mission -– not just for those who are struggling, but for all of us.

When we reduce hunger in the world, or help a farmer recover from a flood or a drought, it strengthens the entire world economy. When we put an end to a preventable disease, all of us are safer because of it. When an entrepreneur can start a new business, it creates jobs in their country, but also opens up new markets for our country. And ultimately, when a nation goes from poverty to prosperity, it makes the world stronger and more secure for everybody.

That’s why the World Bank is so important. And that’s why the leader of the World Bank should have a deep understanding of both the role that development plays in the world, and the importance of creating conditions where assistance is no longer needed.

I believe that nobody is more qualified to carry out that mission than Dr. Jim Kim. It’s time for a development professional to lead the world’s largest development agency. And that’s why today, after a careful and thorough search, I am nominating Dr. Jim Kim to be the next president of the World Bank.

Jim has spent more than two decades working to improve conditions in developing countries around the world. As a physician and an anthropologist, he co-founded Partners in Health, and led a World Health Organization campaign to treat 3 million patients with HIV/AIDS. I have made HIV/AIDS and the fight against that dreaded disease and the promotion of public health a cornerstone of my development agenda, building on some of the outstanding work that was done by President Bush.

We pursue these efforts around the globe because it’s the right thing to do, and also because healthy populations enable growth and prosperity. And I'm pleased that Jim brings this particular experience with him to his new job.

Jim was also the chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He has earned a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship. And for the last three years, he has served as the president of Dartmouth College.

I should also mention that, after immigrating to this country from Korea at age five, Jim went on to become the president of his high school class, the quarterback of the football team, the point guard of the basketball team. I just found out he is a five handicap in golf. I’m a little resentful about that last item. (Laughter.) But he does it all.

Jim has truly global experience. He’s worked from Asia to Africa to the Americas -- from capitals to small villages. His personal story exemplifies the great diversity of our country and the fact that anyone can make it as far as he has as long as they're willing to work hard and look out for others. And his experience makes him ideally suited to forge partnerships all around the world.

So I could not be more pleased to nominate Jim for this job, and I think I can speak for Secretary Clinton and Secretary Geithner when I say that we are looking forward to working with him.

And I also want to take a minute to thank Bob Zoellick once again for all his hard work. Over the last five years, Bob has made the bank more transparent, he has helped shore up progress made in places like Afghanistan. He’s raised billions of dollars to help some of the world’s poorest communities.

Jim is the right person to carry on that legacy, and I know his unique set of skills and years of experience will serve him well. So I’m grateful to Jim for his willingness to serve. I do not think that the World Bank could have a better leader. So, thank you.

DR. KIM: Mr. President, thank you.

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you.

DR. KIM: Thank you, sir.

THE PRESIDENT: You’re going to do great. Thank you. All right?

Q Mr. President, may I ask you about this current case in Florida, very controversial, allegations of lingering racism within our society -- the so-called do not -- I'm sorry -- Stand Your Ground law and the justice in that? Can you comment on the Trayvon Martin case, sir?

THE PRESIDENT: Well, I’m the head of the executive branch, and the Attorney General reports to me so I’ve got to be careful about my statements to make sure that we’re not impairing any investigation that’s taking place right now.

But obviously, this is a tragedy. I can only imagine what these parents are going through. And when I think about this boy, I think about my own kids. And I think every parent in America should be able to understand why it is absolutely imperative that we investigate every aspect of this, and that everybody pulls together -- federal, state and local -- to figure out exactly how this tragedy happened.

So I'm glad that not only is the Justice Department looking into it, I understand now that the governor of the state of Florida has formed a task force to investigate what's taking place. I think all of us have to do some soul searching to figure out how does something like this happen. And that means that examine the laws and the context for what happened, as well as the specifics of the incident.

But my main message is to the parents of Trayvon Martin. If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon. And I think they are right to expect that all of us as Americans are going to take this with the seriousness it deserves, and that we're going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened.

Mar.27,2012

thief

In the Eastern Han Dynasty (东汉), there was a man named Chen Shi (陈寔) .

One day, a thief slipped into his living-room. Hiding behind the beam, the thief waited for Chen Shi to fall asleep.

Chen Shi, finding the thief, called his family together, saying, "To be a upright man one must have aspirations. Men are not born evil. But if one gets used to doing evil things, it will be hard to reform. The gentleman above the beam is such a man."

The thief, hearing this, hurriedly jumped down and knelt on the ground to beg forgiveness.

This idiom is used to refer to a thief.

thief / stealer:a criminal who takes property belonging to someone else with the intention of keeping it or selling(“小偷”最普遍的说法)

shoplifter:a thief who steals goods that are in a store(也就是“商店扒手”的意思,特定指一些装成顾客在商店里行窃的小偷)

pilferer / sneak thief / snitcher:a thief who steals without using violence (这三个是指“小偷小摸、顺手牵羊、不适用暴力”的行窃者,比如“偷报纸的人”就可说成“the paper pilferer”)

pickpocket:a thief who steals from the pockets or purses of others in public places(这个单词很好记,就是“专门看准别人的钱包进行行窃的小偷”)

prowler:someone who prowls or sneaks about; usually with unlawful intentions(多指那种有一点贼头贼脑,徘徊不定的可疑人物)

burglar:a thief who enters a building with intent to steal(主要指“入室行窃的夜贼”,也就是夜间入屋行窃的小偷)

1. Through a friend or an extended business network, personal network, or online social network service

2.Using an employment website

3.Looking through the classifieds in newspapers

4.Using a private or public employment agency or recruiter

5.Looking on a company's web site for open jobs, typically in its applicant tracking system

6.Going to a job fair

CV = curriculum vitae

A curriculum vitae (CV) provides an overview of a person's experience and other qualifications. In some countries, a CV is typically the first item that a potential employer encounters regarding the job seeker and is typically used to screen applicants (people who apply for job online) often followed by an interview when seeking employment.

In the United Kingdom, a CV is short (usually a maximum of 2 sides of A4 paper), and therefore contains only a summary of the job seeker's employment history, qualifications and some personal information. It is often updated to change the emphasis of the information according to the particular position for which the job seeker is applying. Many CVs contain keywords that potential employers might pick up on and display the content in the most flattering manner, brushing over information like poor grades.

In the United States and Canada, a CV is used in academic circles and medical careers as a "replacement" for a résumé and is far more comprehensive; the term résumé is used for most recruitment campaigns. A CV elaborates on education to a greater degree than a résumé and is expected to include a comprehensive listing of professional history including every term of employment, academic credential, publication, contribution or significant achievement. In certain professions, it may even include samples of the person's work and may run to many pages.

It sounds like the plot of a boring "Saw" film, but it's apparently all-too-real. An unemployed Austrian man cut off his own foot with a mitre saw so he could continue receiving jobless benefits.

Hans Url, a 56-year-old from Mitterlabill, then took the foot and cooked it in the oven so doctors could not reattach it.

"The planning was meticulous," Franz Fasching, a police spokesman, told the Daily Mail. "[Url] waited until his wife and his adult son had left the house and he was alone. He then switched it on and sliced off his left foot above the ankle--throwing it in the fire so it would not be possible to reattach it before he called emergency services."

He "then made his way to the garage where he called emergency services and waited for them to arrive." Url was airlifted to a hospital in Graz, where he was put in an artificial coma so doctors could stabilize him.

"The foot was too badly burned to reattach," a hospital spokesman said. "All we could do was seal the wound. He had lost a lot of blood--he almost died on the way to hospital."

According to the Austrian Times, Url had complained before the incident that he was too sick to work and "didn't like the work he was offered." The kicker: according to the paper, being footless does not necessarily qualify Url for unemployment compensation.

"He will be assessed once he is out of hospital and we will see what work we can find for him," Hermann Gössinger, a spokesman for the employment benefits office, said.

In the Spring and Autumn Period (春秋时期,770-476 BC), there was a beauty in the State of Yue called Xishi (西施).

She often suffered from pains in her chest, and so she would often walk around doubled over and with her brows knitted.

There was an ugly girl in the village called Dongshi who envied Xishi.

Striving to emulate Xishi, she imitated her stoop, knitting her brows at the same time.

She thought that this made her elegant, but in fact, it only made her more ugly.

Later, this idiom came to be used to indicate improper imitation that produces the reverse effect.

Have you ever wondered how Starbucks makes their Strawberry Frappuccinos look so vibrantly pink? The pink hue is thanks to crushed up insects, according to new information provided by the coffee chain giant.

In a statement released by Starbucks, the company has revealed that they use cochineal extract, which is the ground-up bodies of insects, as a dye for the popular rose-coloured beverage. Bugs from mainly Mexico and South America are dried out before they are ground and used in the milky-based Frappuccino drink.

As stomach-turning as it may sound, the ingredient is in fact harmless. Commonly used to help liven up the dull hues of jams, meats, cheese, baked goods, alcoholic drinks and more, cochineal extract has been used as a colouring agent in food and drinks for centuries. It has been deemed safe by the United States’ Food and Drug Administration.

Starbucks said it had decided to use cochineal extract to help limit the use of artificial ingredients in its products. ‘At Starbucks, we strive to carry products that meet a variety of dietary lifestyles and needs,’ the statement read. ‘While the strawberry base isn’t a vegan product, it helps us move away from artificial dyes.’

But the all-natural matter is not entirely free of health risks. The World Health Organisation has found that cochineal extract may cause asthma in some people. Others may see an allergic reaction.

Vegan fans may not be happy with its inclusion either. ThisDishIsVegetarian.com, an animal rights and eco-friendly news site, labels the extract non-vegan.

At 8.30pm on Saturday March 31st, 2012 millions of people around the world will turn out the lights for Earth Hour. This awareness movement is intended to get people talking about the importance of reducing human impact on the Earth.

Below you will find lists of activities that you can do to save energy, reduce your impact on the environment, and help spread awareness about Earth issues such as climate change.

Turn Off the Lights

Turn down all of the lights in your home. It's a little strange sitting around in the dark, but it's only for one hour. Just think of what it must have been like before the invention of the light bulb!

Unplug Lamps and Nightlights

Lamps should be unplugged when not in use. Unplug all of the floor and desk lamps in your home for Earth Hour.

Shut Off Your Computer

Even an idle computer uses energy. You can cut down on computer energy costs by powering down all of the devices at your desk for one hour. You can simply switch off the power bar.

Unplug Clocks and Electronics

It won't take long to reset your digital alarm clock after Earth Hour is finished. Unplug as many of the clocks around your home as possible.

Unplug Chargers

For one hour, unplug your cell phone charger, battery re-charger and any other adaptors you have around your home.

Unplug Appliances

At 8:25 on March 31st, it's time to start powering down for Earth Hour. You can start by unplugging your small appliances such as the microwave and coffee maker.

Turn Down the Heat

If you're living in a cool climate and have the heat on in March, try turning your heat down slightly for Earth Hour.

Fix Drafts

Drafty doors and windows cause your heating and cooling bills to go up. Try to repair or cover any drafts around your home before Earth Hour.

Invite Your Friends Over

You can help spread Earth Hour awareness by inviting your friends, family or neighbors to join you for Earth Hour activities.

Fill Up Your Freezer

If you have empty space in your freezer or deep-freeze, you can conserve energy by freezing used pop bottles or milk jugs of water.

Descendants of those who died in the Titanic disaster 100 years ago were some of those who set sail today on a memorial cruise to the site of the wreck.

The MS Balmoral will leave Southampton on the 12-night cruise to commemorate the centenary of the sinking of the liner that hit an iceberg on its maiden voyage.

The same number of 1,309 passengers - not including crew - are aboard the MS Balmoral as on the ill-fated ship with around 50 having a direct family connection to the sinking.

A service will take place at the time it sank. The ship also has the same port of departure in an effort to recreate the voyage of arguably the most famous ship of all time at a cost of between £2,799 and £5,995 per person.

But the Balmoral had to leave two days earlier than the Titanic did as it cannot steam as fast. In keeping with the theme, food on board is from the menus of the White Star Line ship that sank on April 15 1912 with the loss of more than 1,500 lives.

People from 28 different countries have booked to travel and retrace the liner's original route. Many turned up in Southampton today in period costume dressed as first class passengers, crew or steerage passengers. All must be hoping this particular ship makes it to New York - unlike its predecessor.

There will be a special memorial service for passengers above the wreck site on April 14 starting at 11.40pm, when the ship hit the iceberg and another at 2.20am on April 15 when it sank.

Those who have paid to go are from Australia, Canada, the Caribbean, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, South America and the USA - testament to the worldwide appeal of the story made famous by the 1997 film starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio.

A line up of 10 specialist lecturers - some of the world's leading experts on the sinking - will be on board including Philip Littlejohn, grandson of Titanic survivor Alexander James Littlejohn, and the only Titanic relative to have made the dive to the wreck site.

Mr Littlejohn said: "I'm sure my grandfather, a 1st Class Steward on RMS Titanic, would be proud to know his story will be shared with the passengers on this historic cruise. It will be an emotional moment when we are over the wreck site, where I dived in 2001 and where my grandfather left Titanic rowing Lifeboat 13."

Instagram

Facebook has agreed to buy the hugely popular photo-sharing app maker Instagram for about $1 billion in cash and stock in a blockbuster deal reverberating around Silicon Valley.

Facebook’s chief executive and founder made the announcement Monday on Facebook in a post that has already generated tens of thousands of likes. He has pledged to allow Instagram to remain independent.

“For years, we’ve focused on building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends and family. Now, we’ll be able to work even more closely with the Instagram team to also offer the best experiences for sharing beautiful mobile photos with people based on your interests,” Mark Zuckerberg wrote. “We believe these are different experiences that complement each other. But in order to do this well, we need to be mindful about keeping and building on Instagram’s strengths and features rather than just trying to integrate everything into Facebook. That’s why we’re committed to building and growing Instagram independently. Millions of people around the world love the Instagram app and the brand associated with it, and our goal is to help spread this app and brand to even more people.”

Zuckerberg noted that the acquisition marked a milestone for Facebook – and hinted that it might be the last of its size and scope.

Facebook has mainly targeted smaller companies in its acquisitions, spending no more than tens of millions of dollars on each, and usually just to get the raw talent, not the technology. The 2-year-old Instagram in San Francisco has just 13 employees. They didn't hear about the deal until co-founder Kevin Systrom called an all-hands meeting Monday morning.

“It’s the first time we’ve ever acquired a product and company with so many users. We don’t plan on doing many more of these, if any at all. But providing the best photo sharing experience is one reason why so many people love Facebook and we knew it would be worth bringing these two companies together.”

The deal is expected to close later this quarter. Instagram had been rumored to be close to a new funding round that would have valued the startup at $500 million. It had turned down a previous offer from Facebook.Former Facebook executive Matt Cohler with Benchmark Capital is a major investor in Instagram.

Facebook目前正在筹备IPO(首次公开招股,了解更多IPO>>),预计融资最多100亿美元。

1.Instagram

2.Instagram

3.Instagram

At the foot of Mount Fuji, the highest mountain peak in Japan, sprawls a 30 square kilometer forest called Aokigahara.

More commonly referred to as the Sea of Trees, Aokigahara is a forest of unbridled beauty and serenity. Upon entering the region, one must wade through a thicket of trees, slipping over the knotted roots and rocks, to access amazing vantage points to view Mount Fuji and explore hidden icy caverns.

In the forest, one is also completely shrouded in darkness – save for the sporadic stream of sunlight from gaps in the treetops – and experiences an overwhelming silence, pressing in from all sides. As such, it’s a perfect place for solitude and reflection and correspondingly, is the perfect place to die. At least according to the 100 people who commit suicide here every year.

Aokigahara has always been dogged with morbid myths and legends. It is widely believed that the Japanese custom of ubasute, where an elderly relative is left to die in a remote location, was widely practiced in the forest. Aside from tales of ubasute, rumors of demons and hauntings in the forest are also pervasive. The more recent tag of the ‘Suicide Forest’ began to dog the region after tourists began to encounter decomposing bodies in Aokigahara in the 1950’s. Since the early 1970’s, a small army of police, volunteers and journalists annually scour the area in search of bodies.

It is believed that the penchant for suicide in the area stems from the 1960 novel, ‘Wave of Trees’ by Seicho Matsumoto, in which the protagonists commit suicide in Aokigahara forest. The death rate has shown a significant annual increase, reaching a peak in 2004 when 108 people committed suicide in the forest. The sight of hanging bodies in the forest is common, as is the sight of animals feeding on yet undiscovered corpses.

Currently, Aokigahara is considered the second most popular suicide location in the world, losing out only to the Golden Gate Bridge. Authorities have placed signs emblazoned with warnings, “Please reconsider” and “Think carefully about your children, your family”, at the entrance of the forest.

In 2010, 247 people attempted suicide in the forest, though only 54 were successful. A disquieting reminder of the forest troubled history are the scattered personal belongings found throughout the forest from previous suicides. Moss covered shoes, photographs, briefcases, notes and ripped clothing have all been discovered strewn across the forest floor.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has secured over 430 billion dollars in addition to its resources, as the group of 20 advanced countries and emerging countries pledged to beef up the Fund's financial capacity on Friday.

In a communique released on Friday, the G20 countries said there are firm commitments to increase resources made available to the IMF by over 430 billion dollars in addition to the quota increase under the 2010 Reform.

"These resources will be available for the whole membership of the IMF, and not earmarked for any particular region," they noted.

The pledges came as timid world economic recovery was threatened by renewed escalation of euro zone crisis, and the IMF tried to build stronger "global firewall" to tackle crisis and preserve the world economic stability.

"It really showed the resolve of international community to have available tools in the toll kit to resists and defend against the crisis," Christine Lagarde, chief of the IMF, said at a news conference at the Fund Friday.

"This is extremely important, necessary, an expression of collective resolve," she added, noting that the interests of creditors would be well protected.

With the over 430 billion dollars, the IMF lending capacity almost doubled, Lagarde said in a statement, applauding the countries which have made or signaled contribution.

"This signals the strong resolve of the international community to secure global financial stability and put the world economic recovery on a sounder footing," she added.

Boosting the IMF's resources is a hot issue at the spring meetings of the IMF and the World Bank, which officially started Friday in Washington.

The Washington-based global lender said earlier this year that it is seeking to increase its funding capacity by 500 billion dollars to meet the global potential financial needs.

As the financial strains eased recently in the European market, Lagarde said last week the Fund may not need as large additional resources as it previously thought.

The United States, the largest shareholder of the Fund, appeared to be lukewarm on this issue. U.S. Treasury Secretary Geithner has said repeatedly that the U.S. government would not seek additional funds for the IMF to step up its firewall against the risk of European contagion, and bigger IMF role could not substitute tough reforms of the eurozone economies.

PetroChina Company Limited (PetroChina), China's largest oil and gas producer, said Thursday that its net profit rose 5.8 percent year on year in the first quarter.

The company's net profit totaled 39.15 billion yuan ($6.23 billion) in the first three months and earnings per share gained 5.8 percent to 0.21 yuan based on international financial reporting standards (IFRS), the company said in a statement filed with the Shanghai and Hong Kong stock exchanges.

The statement said PetroChina concentrated on its main businesses amid changing economic landscapes both at home and abroad.

The output of crude oil and natural gas rose 3.6 percent and 11.2 percent year on year, respectively, in the first quarter, according to the statement.

Meanwhile, the company processed 257.1 million barrels of crude oil during the period, up 2.8 percent from a year earlier.

Due to high-flying international oil prices, the company reported 10.82 billion yuan in losses in its refining and chemical business areas, marking a slight improvement from the fourth quarter last year as China raised fuel prices two times in the first quarter.

The company sold 36.5 million tons of gasoline, diesel and kerosene during the period, an increase of 15.5 percent from a year earlier.

PetroChina is the Hong Kong- and Shanghai-listed subsidiary of the China National Petroleum Corporation.

Since the city government of Chengdu invited electronics contract manufacturer Foxconn to set up factories in the provincial capital of Sichuan in southwest China in 2010, local public servants have had an extra task on their hands: hiring labor for the world's largest contract manufacturer of consumer electronics. If they should fail, officials will have to meet the demand themselves, reports the Chinese-language Economic Observer.

The production base of the Taiwan-based manufacturer in Chengdu has been the largest investment project in China's interior, which the city hopes will enable its transformation into a center of the technology industry. In 2010, the local government offered a number of preferential conditions regarding tax and land use to solicit the company, which serves as the main contractor for Apple as well as manufacturing products or many other major clients. Most surprisingly, the city also promised to secure workers for the company, and the recruitment goals have become an item on which local officials will be evaluated at the end of the year.

Hiring has not been plain sailing in the past eighteen months, however, and in order to complete their quota, some officials had no choice but to take up job offers at Foxconn themselves.

Chengdu is not the only city participating in the hiring process. It is standard practice for Foxconn to report its workforce needs to the provincial labor authorities, who then order other cities and towns to hire people to meet the company's demands.

There are often incentives and penalties involved for officials. In the city of Luzhou, an official can be paid a 600 yuan (US$95) bonus for signing up a worker, and 1,000 yuan (US$160) for additional workers. If an official does not meet his recruitment quota, the government will deduct 500 yuan (US$80) from his paycheck.

In the past year, the city located more than 12,000 workers for Foxconn's factory in Chengdu.

Liu Baoyu, an official who joined Foxconn in order to meet her personal quota, said the company's labor demands change all the time, depending on the production situation. "It has created chaos in the local government," Liu was quoted by the Economic Observer as saying.

A former Foxconn manager told the newspaper that working conditions at the company were harsh. "Many frontline workers stay for just three months," the manager said.

Another recruiter for Foxconn said many people quit in their first two weeks, which has become a huge burden on the company due to the costs of training and providing uniforms. The government has ordered that workers solicited by officials must work at least 15 days for Foxconn.

Some officials who found themselves unable to meet their recruitment target would seek help from headhunters to introduce workers to join Foxconn just for the 15-day minimum period.

Foxconn in Chengdu hired 120,000 workers when its iPad production in the city was at its peak. The number slid to 90,000 in October 2011 and now stands at around 60,000.

Although Chinese snack foods are almost unheard of outside of the country, some native dishes from southeast China's Shaxian county have made a big splash domestically with the opening of several "Shaxian snack bars" in major cities.

Eleven years ago, Lin Kaiming and his wife traveled from Shaxian, located in Fujian province, to the city of Zhanjiang in southern Guangdong province to open their first Shaxian snack bar. Although they had to work nearly 20 hours a day in the beginning, their returns were satisfactory.

Liu's success is just one example of the 60,000 Shaxian natives who have opened snack bars in China, as well as in the U.S., Japan, Germany, Australia and Singapore.

"The Shaxian snack bars produce an annual turnover of more than 5 billion yuan and a net income of more than 700 million yuan," said Huang Songfu, president of the Shaxian Snacks Guild.

The local government in Shaxian has made efforts to help the snack food industry flourish.

"To increase the employment rate and incomes for local residents, the Shaxian government has always played an active role in promoting Shaxian snacks," said Zheng Xingjing, director of the Shaxian Snack Bureau. Zheng said the bureau, established in 1997, is the first and perhaps only one of its kind in the entire country.

Guan said he intends to boost the industry to a new level by starting a listed company to act as a "carrier" for Shaxian snacks, a goal that Huang said can be realized by incorporating large private snack food chains, as well as processing and supply companies.

"Shaxian snacks bear the dreams of all of Shaxian's people," said Le Rongguang, deputy magistrate of Shaxian county. "We have spared no efforts to foster the industry's growth."

Striding through the Kremlin’s gold-encrusted doors and applauded by the modern nobility, Vladimir Putin returns to the Russian presidency Monday in the throne room of the czars, now a dangerously weakened autocrat.

The protests of December shook his all-powerful countenance, setting off machinations by the powers behind him who are intent on preserving their authority and privilege despite demands for democracy and reform. That conflict portends difficult and uncertain days for Russia, with Putin pressured to display more muscle than compromise.

“Putin needs to be strong,” said Vladimir Pastukhov, a Russian political scientist and visiting fellow at Oxford University, “otherwise there will be 12,000 knives to his back the next day.”

Putin has ruled Russia since 2000, the past four years as prime minister, and until December the nation had traded the unpredictability of democracy for the certainty of a strong hand.

Then, a vocal and economically important minority, angered by widespread allegations of fraud in parliamentary elections, declared an end to the bargain, taking to the streets in protest. The demonstrations shook what Putin called his “vertical of power,” based on a line of authority that ran from the Kremlin down to the smallest city hall.

By March, when he was elected president with a reported 64 percent of the vote, doubts had appeared about his legitimacy. Now, few expect anything but a long, tumultuous road for democratic reform. Many fear turmoil. No one knows what lies ahead after Monday’s inauguration for what now is a six-year presidential term.

Putin has become the protector of an army of corrupt officials and managers throughout the country who enjoy great authority and profit as long as they are loyal. Now, hidden from public view, a battle reportedly is underway between hard-liners insisting that only an uncompromising crackdown will save them and more progressive elements urging reform. The latter want to let some of the steam of anger escape and open Russia to economic development.

an army of:一大批;一大群

If Putin antagonizes the hard-liners, an assortment of security and military industrial insiders among them, he risks plots against him. If he cannot quiet the protests, he courts a popular upheaval.

an assortment of:一套

Most likely, he will turn to the siloviki — the Russian term for members of the security services and military, those with power and guns — for support, said Dmitri Oreshkin, an organizer of the League of Voters, created this year to pursue fair elections.

“It probably won’t be as stringent as the Soviet Union,” he said, “but tougher than five years ago.”

Soviet Union:

On Friday, authorities in Ufa, 725 miles to the east of the capital, reportedly prevented a dozen activists from boarding a train to Moscow, where an anti-Putin demonstration is planned for Sunday. Others have reported intimidating visits from police.

“The Putin returning to the Kremlin is not the Putin who left it four years ago,” said Boris Makarenko, deputy director of the Center for Political Technologies. “He left at the peak of economic growth and optimism about increasing prosperity. Now he will be cautious, conflicted. He understands that the development of Russia and the economy requires independent actors in business and public life, but at the same time he feels the need from his KGB years to keep everything under control.”

The U.S. will lift the total saving rate to the average level of the past 30 years (from 1980 to 2010) and pledged to cut the fiscal deficits by at least 5 trillion U.S. dollars within 10 years.

American's saving rate has gone up by four points so far.

The saving rate is likely to remain high, given concerns about pensions and other social-security provisions.

All buildings completely meet green and power saving construction standard, power saving rate reaches up to 50%.

They're being called the "Benjamin Button" brothers--a reference to "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," the 2008 movie in which Brad Pitt plays a man who ages in reverse.

Matthew Clark, 39, of Lincoln, England and his brother Michael Clark, 42, last year were reportedly given a vague diagnosis of terminal leukodystrophy. The brothers' particular version of the disorder caused them to lose the ability to think and behave as adults, The Telegraph reported.

After a phase of throwing temper tantrums and watching cartoons, the brothers have gradually lost the ability to talk and walk, leaving them crawling around their parents' home.

The two men still look their age, albeit with a disarming air of innocence about them, but they are beginning to exhibit physical signs of their regression back into childhood.

For their parents, Christine and Anthony Clark, it is heartbreaking. “There are no words to describe how we feel. It’s devastating,” says Mr Clark, the man who watched both of his sons grow up and marry, who looked on proudly as Michael joined the RAF and Matthew became a father himself.

“It’s a devastating disease," the men's father, Anthony Clark, told The Telegraph. "Both of them are very childlike now.”

Neither paper indicated which form of leukodystrophy the men have--there are about 40 known types of the largely genetic brain cell-damaging disorder--or who diagnosed the brothers.

Is it really possible for adults to revert to a childlike state? Experts in the U.S. told The Huffington Post that it is--though it occurs very rarely.

"'Leukodystrophy' is a term used for progressive disorders that causes damage or deterioration to the white matter of the brain," Dr. Robert Marion, chief of genetics and developmental medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, told The Huffington Post.

Dr. Marion, who said he had no specific knowledge of the brothers, added that the disorder they reportedly have is hereditary and that the mental deterioration happens gradually.

There are infantile, juvenile and adult forms of leukodystrophy. As for cases that apparently arise in adulthood, Dr. Marion said, "It’s possible that nobody has really noticed it until its gotten so bad that it's reached this level of detection. They reach adulthood or later adolescence and they’ve attained everything they could, then start having neurological symptoms. They can have dementia, they start losing their memory or their ability to function...they’ll lose their ability to walk, wind up wheelchair-bound."

The latest issue of Fortune magazine has the annual list of America's top earning corporations. In 2011, those 500 companies made a combined profit of $824.5 billion. The 2011 combined profit smashed the previous 2006 record of $785 billion and was a 16.4 percent profit increase over 2010.

"Corporate America is doing great right now," Andy Serwer, Fortune magazine managing editor, said Monday on "CBS This Morning."

"The consumer in America, not so great. Government in the United States, not so well," Serwer said. "But businesses are doing well. They've really come out of the downturn, doing things right. They're in good shape. A lot of that has to do with the fact that they've cut back. They've cut costs during the downturn meaning layoffs quite frankly. That's why profits are so high."

Fortune 500 Top 10 List:

1. Exxon Mobil

2. Walmart Stores

3. Chevron

5. General Motors

6. General Electric

7. Berkshire Hathaway

8. Fannie Mae 房利美

9. Ford Motor

10. Hewlett-Packard

Gold futures on the COMEX division of the New York Mercantile Exchange dropped sharply Tuesday to settle at their lowest level since January. The most active gold contract for June delivery lost 34.6 U.S. dollars, or 2.16 percent, to settle at 1,604.5 dollars per ounce.

spot/physical market 现货市场

The prices are usually based on futures prices.

Agricultural futures have long been a way to limit risk with crop prices.

At the same time, the hedge will be more efficient when the actuals and the object of futures contract are the same.

Beijing is still willing to show the "greatest sincerity" to resolve the island impasse through diplomacy with Manila, a senior Chinese diplomat said on Tuesday.

Huangyan Island has been its undisputable territory since ancient times and the waters around the island have been a traditional Chinese fishery, Deng Zhonghua, director of the department of boundary and ocean affairs with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said in a Tuesday interview with Phoenix TV.

"Our fishermen and fishing boats' safety must be ensured and our fishermen's dignity should not be offended and their regular fishery operations should not be interrupted or blocked," Deng said.

China and the Philippines are close neighbors with seawater in between, and have enjoyed friendly contact for more than 1,000 years, Deng added.

"We have 1,000 reasons to ensure and develop the bilateral traditional friendship and we are not expected to have any excuse to breach the relation," he said.

China and the Philippines are expected to cooperate and achieve a win-win situation. "Despite the fact that the Philippine side humiliated barehanded Chinese fishermen with armed forces, we remained restrained to deal with the situation," said Deng.

On April 10, a Philippine warship entered the island's territorial waters, dispatched personnel to harass Chinese fishing boats and attempted to detain the Chinese fishermen.

China said the move infringed China's sovereignty. Two Chinese patrol ships in the area later came to the fishermen's rescue and the warship left.

But the impasse continued as Philippine vessels were reported to be still in China's territorial waters on Tuesday.

Chinese Vice-Foreign Minister Fu Ying summoned Alex Chua, the charge d'affaires of the Philippine Embassy in Beijing on Monday. The Monday summons was the third following previous ones on April 15 and 18.

European countries and the EU have fallen sharply in worldwide popularity, an opinion poll for the BBC suggests.

The percentage of those surveyed giving positive views of EU influence dropped by an average of 8% - from 56% to 48% - since the last poll in 2011.

Views of China, on the other hand, improved significantly, allowing it to overtake the EU. Japan replaced Germany as the most popular country.

The poll was based on the answers of about 24,000 people in 22 countries.

Respondents were asked to rate the influence in the world of 16 countries and the EU as either "mostly positive" or "mostly negative".

Ratings of the EU and many European countries dropped across the countries surveyed in both 2011 and 2012, when 27 countries were surveyed. Positive views of Britain fell by by 6% and of France by 4%.

"The turmoil in the EU, long seen as an attractive bastion of political and economic stability, has raised doubts in people's minds about its continued ability to be a global leader," the head of polling company GlobeScan, Chris Coulter, said. "Hopes are turning to China."

Germany, the most positively regarded nation last year, saw its positive ratings drop from 60% to 56%, putting it in second place behind Japan, which rose 2% to 58%.

Positive views of China rose from 46% to 50%, with the biggest rises recorded in Britain, Australia, Canada, and Germany.

Views of the US remain broadly unchanged, the poll suggests, with 47% of respondents giving positive views and 33% negative views, compared to 48% and 31% in 2010.

A Utah woman who bought a box of discount tampons got a lot more than she had expected when she opened it up.

Cindy Davidson, 39, unwrapped the package she purchased at a Salt Lake City store and instead of finding cotton tampons, she found tiny packages of white powder stuffed inside the cardboard applicators.

Afraid of what the powder might be, she called police who identified the stashed substance as cocaine, which could be part of a sophisticated drug smuggling operation.

On Saturday, Ms Davidson stopped by a bargain store on 1600 South Empire Road to buy a pack of Crest White Strips, according to the Smoking Gun.

She saw an inexpensive box of Boots brand tampons and tossed it in her cart. The store, NPS, sells damaged freight goods and unclaimed property at a steep discount.

The next day she opened the sealed cellophane box and did not find what she was looking for.

'I noticed there was packaging inside that wasn't normal,' she said to KSL. 'They had removed the tampon and there was cocaine inside.'

At first she didn't identify the white powder as the drug and tried to open it. After five minutes of trying to open up the plastic-wrapped, fake tampon she got nervous.

'I thought it might have been a terrorist attack,' she said. She called the police, who weren't able to immediately identify the substance.

The officers' investigation revealed it was cocaine. 'It appears to be a highly sophisticated way of attempting to smuggle or get drugs,' Detective Carlie Wiechman said to KSL.

All of the boxes of tampons have been pulled from the shelves of the store, according to KSL, and police have launched a full-scale investigation.

McDonald's Corp, the world's largest restaurant company, raised the prices of four products by 1 yuan ($0.15) in China at the end of April, the company confirmed on Tuesday.

The price increase is around 17 percent and, apart from saying it was for structural adjustment, McDonald's did not give a specific reason for the rise.

It was the company's second rise in China this year. The four products for breakfast and lunch were not included in previous rise. The previous was in January. The price of some McDonald's products went up by 0.5 to 2 yuan on Jan 12.

McDonald's explained in January that the price rise mainly resulted from the continuous rise in costs of materials and other elements.

It is possible that other fast-food chains, such as KFC, Starbuck and Pizza Hut, will follow the rise this year, business insiders said, because the cost of human resources, raw materials and transportation is still going up.

Political deadlock in Greece rattled world markets Monday, reviving fears that the fractious Mediterranean country could spurn an international bailout, abandon the common European currency and risk a fresh round of world economic turmoil.

European stock indexes fell, with Greece’s market now at a 20-year low, while the euro currency continued a recent decline against the dollar. U.S. stocks also fell.

Coming only days before the leaders of the world’s Group of Eight industrialized nations meet at Camp David, the standoff in Greece over its political direction has thrust Europe’s troubles to the top of the agenda. A downturn in Europe could stagger a fragile recovery in the United States and undermine growth around the world.

Group of Eight:

Fighting a new downturn would be a challenge for the major economies, many of which have not fully stabilized since the last big economic crisis.

After the 2008 collapse of the Wall Street investment bank Lehman Brothers, the United States, Europe and China unleashed trillions of dollars in economic stimulus to limit the blow to global markets and encourage a turnaround. With growth in China slowing and U.S. officials looking to tame record government deficits, that sort of massive reaction is unlikely — leaving Europe, in a sense, operating without a safety net.

blow to:对……的打击

The global leaders will gather at a vulnerable time for major economies, with most of the countries in the group struggling to cope with levels of public debt unseen since World War II, high unemployment, and years of potentially painful austerity in the offing.

cope with:与……

In recent weeks, Spain’s borrowing costs have been rising to dangerous levels, with investors losing confidence in the country’s fiscal health. And on Monday, Moody’s downgraded the credit standing of all Italian banks because of financial problems in that country.

The economic worries are roiling politics. President Obama faces a reelection contest that will largely focus on the economy. French voters recently ousted their president amid a public backlash over government austerity programs. Italy is battling to avoid needing an international bailout. And German Chancellor Angela Merkel, whose party was stung over the weekend by losses in regional elections, is trying to maintain Europe’s focus on debt control even as the risks of cutting too far too fast are becoming apparent.

backlash over:反对

In that context, Greece’s political infighting might seem a sideshow. The country’s economy is tiny, and its financial system has been largely quarantined over the past two years from the rest of the world. It still owes a lot of money. But Greece’s debts now rest mostly with institutions such as the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund, which are in a better position than private investors to absorb the shock if Greece reneges on its obligations and, as a result, drops out of the euro zone.

be quarantine over:被隔离在……

renege on:违背……

An exit by Greece, however, is still a scenario Europe wants to avoid. If Greece drops out of the currency zone, investors might grow concerned that other countries could follow suit. In turn, that could endanger the larger Italian and Spanish economies if investors decide they are too risky and stop buying their bonds. The fallout could be severe — a possible worldwide drop in lending as banks try to avoid risk, and a downturn in trade, investment and other economic activity.

The article accompanying the cover was written by the news magazine's regular blogger, Andrew Sullivan, who is an openly gay self-titled conservative political pundit.

'He had to discover his black identity and then reconcile it with his white family, just as gays discover their homosexual identity and then have to reconcile it with their heterosexual family,' he wrote, describing the similarities between Mr Obama and the gay community.

There was little doubt that Newsweek would be covering the President's historic announcement that he supports same-sex marriage after he had a sit-down television interview confirming what many already believed to be the case. This was, however, the first time that a sitting President had done so, and the magazine asserts that such a move was a calculated one that had been thoroughly planned.

'It’s easy to write off President Obama’s announcement of his support for gay marriage as a political ploy during an election year. But don’t believe the cynics,' representatives from the news magazine told Politico in a statement about the article.

Republicans, the vast majority of whom are against gay marriage, said that Mr Obama simply made his historic announcement in an effort to gain support among liberal voters in the lead up to the general election.

The Changhong H5018, a low-end smartphone priced at 899 yuan, is the second smartphone model to run on Baidu's mobile operating system. Consumer electronics manufacturer Sichuan Changhong Electric Co partnered with Baidu to produce the handset.

The new smartphone integrates Baidu's cloud computing technology and cloud-based services and applications. Through the device, users can enjoy 100-gigabyte cloud storage and access Baidu services such as a search engine, maps, music and an application store.

Baidu launched its first smartphone in cooperation with Dell Inc last September, but the device received a muted market response due to its high price and limited sales channels.

"The Baidu Cloud smart terminal platform can introduce a high-quality mobile surfing experience to users, and more importantly, it will help cut mobile phone manufacturers' costs," Baidu Vice-President Wang Jin told a media briefing in Beijing on Tuesday.

In addition to Dell and Changhong, Wang revealed that a number of other mobile phone manufacturers had been discussing the possibility of adopting Baidu's operating system.

Baidu's participation in China's smartphone market is seen by analysts as a strategic move to embrace mobile Internet, analysts said.

The company had a 78.5 percent share of China's Internet search engine market in the first quarter but has a far less influential position in the nation's mobile search engine market.

Baidu had a 34.9 percent share of China's wireless search engine market last year, while Shenzhen-based Easou.com had 21 percent and Soso.com, a mobile search subsidiary under Tencent Holdings Ltd, brought up the rear with 19.7 percent, according to research firm Analysys International.

However, analysts were not optimistic about the market performance of Baidu's smartphone.

Wang Ying from Analysys International said competition in China's low-end smartphone market is heating up, with more players from home and abroad joining the fray.

"To be frank, though Changhong is famous for its home appliance products, it is less competitive in the mobile phone field," Wang said.

Domestic rivals, such as Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and ZTE Corp, have the upper hand in the entry-level smartphone market through their good relationships with telecom carriers.Meanwhile, international players, such as Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and HTC Corp, can take advantage of their strong branding.

China will lower banks' reserve requirement ratio (RRR) by 0.5 percentage points starting May 18, the country's central bank announced Saturday. The cut, the second of its kind this year, will drop the RRR for the country's large financial institutions to 20 percent and the medium- and small-sized financial institutions to 16.5 percent, according to the People's Bank of China.

the People's Bank of China

If the reserve requirement ratio is 10%, for example, a bank that receives a $100 deposit may lend out $90 of that deposit.

Lifting the reserve requirement ratio has another benefit for the PBOC, which has to manage the huge funds flow into China, mainly from the country's large and swelling trade surplus.

The People's Bank of China raised the commercial bank reserve requirement by 50 basis points from January 15, which will reduce the amount available for lending.

If you’ve never quite managed to finish Pride And Prejudice or Jane Eyre, you’re not alone. Some 71 per cent of us claim we’ve read classics in an attempt to seem more cultured, according to a study by Lindeman’s Wine and Book Club.

Most ‘book bluffers’ said they lied about their reading because they did not want to appear stupid. More men were fibbers, with 23 per cent saying they had lied to impress a female, while women said they feared friends’ and colleagues’ judgement.

Books that had been made into films or TV series were the most lied about as people at least knew the plot. The top five books people claimed to have read were: Pride And Prejudice, The Lord Of The Rings, Jane Eyre, Tess Of The d’Urbervilles and The Hobbit.

Less than half of Brits (45 per cent) correctly named Emily Bronte as the author of Wuthering Heights. Many believed it to be Charles Dickens (16 per cent), Charlotte Bronte (13 per cent), fictitious character Jane Eyre (12 per cent) and even the singer Kate Bush (4 per cent).

When it comes to Jane Eyre, 15 per cent wrongly think it was written by Jane Austen while the Bronte sisters are most commonly credited with writing Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles.

According to Debrett’s, the authority on etiquette, wanting to appear literary is a peculiarly British trait. David Miller, Director at Debrett’s, said: 'Social etiquette is an important part of being British and we’ve been bound by it for centuries.

'We can’t help but care about how we’re perceived by others - it’s an intrinsic part of our DNA, which makes the lengths we’ll go to keep face ever more amusing.

'It’s notable men are most likely to bluff about the books they’ve read in order to win over the fairer sex. However it’s interesting women are most concerned about being judged by their female peers, casting a shadow on modern day notions of sisterhood.'

Four in ten Brits confess they keep works of literature on their bookshelves purely for display purposes. In a bid to keep up appearances, 57 per cent make sure the tomes on view are literary classics - even if they’ve never digested a word of them.

We’re also keen to impress others while reading on the move, with 23 per cent of us making sure we are seen out and about with the ‘right’ book.

The study was conducted by the Lindeman’s Wine and Book Club which will be holding events at Oxfam bookshops nationwide.

Robin Gibb, one of the last members of the iconic familial pop group the Bee Gees, died Sunday. He was 62.

"The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announce with great sadness that Robin passed away today following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery," his rep said in a statement. "The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time."

Along with his twin Maurice and brother Barry, Gibb formed the Bee Gees (in part, to stand for the Brothers Gibb), and together they recorded decades of hit songs, including the iconic Stayin' Alive.

In October 2011, the Songwriting Hall of Famer fell ill with intestinal problems and was taken from his home near Thame, England, to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford for tests and treatment for inflammation of the colon, his rep said.

His wife Dwina – with whom he had a son, Robin-John – said at the time that she was "desperately worried" about his health, given the Gibb family history of gastrointestinal problems. Robin's twin Maurice died of intestinal complications in 2003.

Gibb left the hospital four days later. In mid-April 2012, he was in a coma, the result of pneumonia, and yet rallied and regained consciousness more than a week later.

Despite being best known for the songs like Stayin' Alive that helped make the 1977 John Travolta movie Saturday Night Fever such an enduring hit (and its soundtrack a 15-time platinum seller), Gibb and his brothers' career had started a decade earlier.

Then, rather than Barry's falsetto vocals, it was Robin's pitch-changing vibrato that was the early lead voice in the group.

代表作有70年代推出的的士高歌曲《How Deep Is Your Love》、《Stayin' Alive》等。

Priscilla Chan has long been known as the girlfriend of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, but on Saturday she updated her status to the billionaire's wife.

Given their nine-year relationship which started when she was a freshman and he a sophomore at Harvard, she has known the man behind the massive social networking site well before he became one of the richest people in the world.

The surprise announcement of the couple's wedding last weekend has prompted a closer inspection of the woman who is now effectively one of the first ladies of Silicon Valley.

1. She's been with Zuck since college

Although "The Social Network" made it seem as though Zuckerberg's ambition was driven in part by his failures with women, the truth is he and Chan have been dating since their college days at Harvard. They met at a party while waiting in line for the bathroom; Chan later told The New Yorker that she thought Zuckerberg was "this nerdy guy who was just a little bit out there."

2. He offered her a job, she offered him candy

When Zuckerberg left Harvard in 2005 to focus on Facebook full time, he began recruiting classmates for positions at the facebook (as it was then known). According to The Harvard Crimson, Zuckerberg was sitting outside after a campus recruiting session when Chan walked by:

"Hey Priscilla, do you want a job at the facebook?" Zuckerberg asked a passing friend.

"I'd love a job at facebook," Priscilla Chan responded, offering him a Twizzler.

3. Their relationship has rules

Author and tech journalist Sarah Lacy has written that Chan has imposed strict rules on her relationship with Zuckerberg -- not because she doesn't trust him, but because he's such a workaholic. One of the top rules: "One date per week, a minimum of a hundred minutes of alone time, not in his apartment, and definitely not at Facebook."

4. She helped spark Zuckerberg's interest in China

Chan, who is Chinese-American, brought Zuckerberg on a trip to China in 2010. (Their holiday included some business meetings, which prompted speculation  about Facebook's interests in the Chinese market.) To prepare for the visit, Zuckerberg studied the Chinese language every morning.

5. She's on Facebook
Facebook

That's a no-brainer, right? According to the publicly available portion of Chan's Facebook page, she's into cooking, photography, learning Spanish, working with kids and visiting warm locales.
