Chinese conglomerate Dalian Wanda Group Corp. has struck a deal to buy cinema chain AMC Entertainment Holdings, one of the year’s biggest deals by an Asian company into the U.S.

Wanda will pay $2.6 billion for the company, which is currently privately-owned by investors including Apollo Global Management, Bain Capital, Carlyle Group, CCMP Capital Advisors and Spectrum Equity Investors.

Wanda owns commercial properties across China, and has interests in hospitality and retail, including partnerships with hotel groups such as Accor, Starwood and Hilton, according to a statement from the company. It has been investing in the cultural industry since 2005, and is involved in film distribution and production. It said it made a profit of about $16.7 billion in 2007.

According to Dealogic, the deal is the largest M&A transaction in the leisure and recreation sector this year, and the fourth-largest Asia outbound M&A deal, excluding Japan, beating an investment in January by China Petrochemical Corp. into Devon Energy Corp.’s shale gas assets in the U.S. for $2.5 billion. It also lifts China outbound volume to $16.8 billion year-to-date, up 6% from the same period last year.

The deal is the latest in the movie industry between the U.S. and China. Last week, News Corp. which owns 20th Century Fox film studio, bought a 19.9% stake in one of China’s largest film distributors, Bona Film Group Ltd., directly from the firm’s founder and Chief Executive Yu dong. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

In addition, DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. said in February it would form a joint venture with state-owned China Media Capital and Shanghai Media Group Inc.

Home rental prices in many cities across China have been rising steadily since the end of last year, and are becoming a burden for low income earners. Experts are encouraging the government to increase supplies of public rental houses in order to meet the housing needs.

According to statistics from a real estate industry research institute in Wuhan, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the city was 878 yuan (139U.S. dollars) per month in April, up 37 percent compared to March. Rents for two-bedroom and three-bedroom apartments also went up 18 percent and 27 percent respectively month-on-month in April.

A surge in demand is behind the recent rental price hike, experts said.

Beijing remained a landlord's market in the first quarter, with demand remaining active. The rent growth, however, had slowed down compared with last year, real estate consultancy firm Cushman & Wakefield China said in its latest report.

April's moderation in the consumer price index rose by 3.4 percent, down from 3.6 percent in March, as aided by an easing in costs for food and housing.

Property sales in China's 11 major cities (not including Beijing) in the last two days of April increased 46 percent from the same period last year, according to Citigroup Global Markets.

A survey provided different findings from those in 2011 when Citigroup found that for the same 11 cities there was a year-on-year fall of 25 to 30 percent in housing sales.

Falling prices, together with stricter lending standards, have spurred a shift by would-be home buyers to the rental market, causing recent declines in the sales of both new and existing homes.

Public rental apartments are a type of affordable housing, which refers to units with set standards, prices and rentals provided by the governments for urban families with low and middle incomes. The various types of affordable housing include public rental apartment, low-rent houses, economically affordable houses and fixed-price commercial apartments.

Chen Jie, professor with the center of housing policy studies at Fudan University in Shanghai, called for different types of public rental apartments to be built and expanded, for example, in combination with dormitories to meet the needs of residents with different income levels.

Some experts suggested apartments be planned together with public transport and service facilities.

Some local governments have begun to lower the stringent requirements for applications for public rental apartment. The Housing Administration Department of Hongshan District in Wuhan recently decided to lift restrictions on per capita income by raising the monthly per capita income standard from below 2,500 yuan to below 3,500 yuan.

But wages and rental prices are rising in the longer term, noted ANZ bank in a commentary.

"We remain cautious on China's inflation outlook," it said, adding that "for the foreseeable future we expect to see significant increases in utility prices such as water, electricity, and fuel."

More than $10bn (£6.3bn) was wiped off Facebook's value on its first full day as a public company, rattling investors and provoking criticism of the social network's banking advisers.

Facebook slumped as much as 13pc over the first hour of trading in New York, as shareholders scrambled to sell shares in what had beenpitched as the greatest growth story of the decade.

be pitched as:被定位为

The company's founder Mark Zuckerberg, who married his long-term girlfriend over the weekend, saw the value of his fortune drop by more than $2bn to just under $17bn, as the shares closed down 11pc, at $34.03.

"The market is now collectively reflecting the real risks around Facebook," said Brian Wieser, an analyst at Pivotal Research Group, which has a "sell" rating on the company. "The danger for Facebook, is that when you price it very high, the risks to that price now become the overarching narrative for the company."

The much vaunted $104bn flotation – the largest ever by a US technology company – is rapidly turning into a major embarrassment for the social networking site and Wall Street. Technical problems suffered by Nasdaq delayed the opening on Friday.

(National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotation)

The company's main banking adviser Morgan Stanley is thought to have bought up shares in significant volumes to support Facebook's stock after the lacklustre float last week. That support is likely to have been withdrawn in part yesterday, accentuating the share price fall.

Facebook's advisers shared $176m in fees for managing the flotation.

In an attempt to diffuse the mounting criticism, Robert Greifeld, the chief executive of the Nasdaq, admitted that the flotation had not been the company's "finest hour." However, he insisted that the technical glitches were not behind the lack of demand for Facebook shares that became evident yesterday.

Analysts said Facebook's troubled start to life as a public company only intensifies the pressure on Mr Zuckerberg and his top lieutenants to justify a valuation that makes it one of the S&P 500's most expensive companies. Based on current earnings, only Amazon and Equity Residential are more expensive to buy, according to Bloomberg.

"The valuation is all about future expectations," said Andrew Caldwell, a valuations partner at BDO in London. "There's no basis for it in current performance."

In the days before the flotation, Facebook warned that it had yet to find a way of generating meaningful revenue from the growing army of users who access Facebook through mobile devices rather than desktop computers.

The number of Facebook's mobile users soared 41pc to 526m in the 12 months to March.

http://www.tudou.com/v/sEYv4tOcKYk/&resourceId=0_04_02_99/v.swf
The torch was on the side of David Follett's wheelchair in Great Torrington, Devon, when it went out for the first time since arriving in Britain ahead of the Olympics.

A replacement flame was brought from the vehicle convoy that accompanies the torch bearers.

A spokesman for Locog said: "The flame went out due to a malfunctioning burner. It is not uncommon for a flame to go out and this can happen for a number of reasons, for example, in extreme winds.

"We keep the mother flame in specially designed miners' lanterns so if the flame does go out for some reason on the relay we re-light it from the source of the flame."

Follett, a wheelchair badminton champion from nearby Exeter, was able to continue using a substitute torch which had been lit from the mother flame.

The Olympic torches were designed in London by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, who commended its ability to withstand adverse weather and stay lit in an interview last week.
"The torch had to be economical and sustainable as well as being beautiful and strong, so it’s an incredibly complicated piece of design," they said.

"It has to function at high altitudes, sub-zero temperatures, in strong winds and also be incredibly light as so many different types of people will be carrying it."

The flame is supposed to remain alight even in high winds because of a gas burner system held in the centre of the torch which emits a gas mix that optimises flame height, colour and luminosity.

The relay is in its third day and the torch is travelling between Exeter and Taunton. Former Long jump gold medal winner Jonathan Edwards and cricketer Marcus Trescothick are among Monday's runners.

This is not the first occasion on which the Olympic flame has been extinguished in recent days. A gust of wind blew out the flame during a ceremony in Olympia, Greece while it was being held by an actress playing a high priestess who was re-enacting a scene from the ancient Olympics.

U.S. Department of State spokesperson Victoria Nuland said on Thursday the department is going to sort out the mess-up in the visa processing issue related to Confucius Institutes in the United States, to which the department referred in a recent directive to U.S. universities.

Nobody Shall Leave

Nuland said in a daily briefing on Thursday that the department is going to "do our best to fix this without having anybody have to leave."

The directive sent by the U.S. Department of State on May 17 to U.S. universities which sponsor Confucius Institutes states that any academics at university-based institutes who are teaching at the primary and secondary-school levels (K-12) are violating the terms of their visas and expected to return China at the end of the current academic school year in June to apply for appropriate visas.

Nuland said the problems referred in the directive is "not about the Confucius Institutes themselves," but "simply about whether the right visa status was applied in these cases."

Nuland explained that there are two categories of J-1 education visa, one kind for teachers in kindergarten through high school while another kind for professors and scholars at university level, where "some muddling and messing up" occurred in the processing.

She said some folks who were participating and teaching in programs that were K-12 level were given university-style J-1 visas.

"Nobody's going to have to leave the country. It's all going to get cleared up," said her.

Confucius Institute Not Targeted

Nuland denied that the directive is targeting Confucius Institutes in the United States, and reiterated the importance of the people-to-people understanding between the United State and China.

"The U.S. greatly values its people-to-people exchange with China," she stressed, "this was one of the centerpieces of the Secretary's (Hillary Clinton) participation in the Strategic and Economic Dialogue."

But Nuland did not speak to why the mess-up occurred nor why the J-1 visas related issues came up now, given that the first Confucius Institute in the country was launched in the University of Maryland back to 2004.

The State Department also said in the directive that it has determined that the Confucius Institutes must obtain separate American accreditation in order to continue to accept foreign scholars and professors as teachers.

But Nuland did not refer to this issue during her briefing.

A report by the U.S. Chronicle of Higher Education said it is unclear what prompted the State Department to issue such a policy statement, as Confucius Institutes have been on American campuses for nearly a decade.

The magazine reported on Wednesday that the State Department " appears to be backpedaling from its insistence in the memorandum" issued last week.

A department official, who spoke with the magazine on the condition of not being named, called this section of the policy statement "confusing" and said it would be redrafted to clarify the issue, the magazine reported on Wednesday.

THE US State Department has ordered Chinese academics with a J-1 visa and teaching at the Confucius Institutes in the US to leave the country before June 30 and said their visas won't be extended, in a move that could disrupt the activities of these institutes.

In a policy directive issued on May 17, the State Department said it is reviewing the credentials of these Confucius Institutes which are university-based, Chinese-sponsored language and cultural centers, and said these institutes should get certification from the US government before carrying out teaching activities in American universities.

However, the directive did not mention where the Confucius Institutes can go to get the certification. Similar cultural establishments like Germany's Goethe Institute and France's Alliance Francaise don't have the certification either, People's Daily reported today.

Officials of the Confucius Institutes in the University of Maryland and George Mason University are bewildered by the decision and are communicating with authorities regarding the certification.

The Confucius Institute, named after the Chinese philosopher and educator Confucius (551-479 BC), is a non-profit institution aimed at promoting Chinese language and culture in foreign countries. There are more than 350 Confucius Institutes and 500 Confucius Classrooms around the world.

Lady Gaga

In the Season 23 finale of "The Simpsons," (Sunday, May 20 at 8 p.m. ET on Fox) Lady Gaga comes to Springfield to help Lisa with her self-esteem in an episode titled "Lisa Goes Gaga."

In two preview clips released by Fox, the pop icon puts on a concert (clad in meat-inspired hummingbird and Grammy dresses) urging Springfield's citizens to appreciate each other for what makes them unique.

She sings: "When they're young, all little monsters learn that they are scary. Ugly, stupid, shunned by cupid, overweight and hairy. But every monster needs to find that secret deep inside. That transforms Dr. Jekyl into sexy Mr. Hyde. All my monsters are beautiful ... Monsters don't need implants or a bitchin' monster car, monsters only need to love the monsters that they are."

Later, she tries to cheer up a down-in-the-dumps Lisa, who's been outed as the author of positive posts about herself on school's blog, with a personalized flash-mob. "Now listen, if that didn't fundamentally change who you are, I don't know what," Gaga quips.

Apple has filed an application with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office for an optical stylus patent.

Yes, you read that right: Apple wants to patent a stylus, the very thing Steve Jobs famously shunned when he unveiled the original iPhone.

Apple's idea of the stylus, however, is slightly different from the simple styluses you usually get with tablets today. It's an optical device that can determine (via a pressure sensor) when it's in contact with a surface and can capture an image using a built-in camera.

In one iteration, the stylus also may include one or more orientation determining sensors, such as accelerometers and/or gyroscopes. Haptic feedback is also an option.

This functionality obviously doesn't change the usual problems that come with a stylus."Who wants a stylus? You have to get them, you put them away, you lose them -- yuck," Jobs complained.

Furthermore, the patent application doesn't necessarily mean the next iPad will come with a stylus -- perhaps it will happen in the distant future, perhaps never.

However, Apple is well known for the usability of its products, and we're sure the company wouldn't just pack a stylus with an iPhone or iPad as an afterthought. What do you think: How could an optical stylus fit with Apple's design philosophy?

The Department of Homeland Security has been forced to release a list of keywords and phrases it uses to monitor social networking sites and online media for signs of terrorist or other threats against the U.S.

The intriguing the list includes obvious choices such as 'attack', 'Al Qaeda', 'terrorism' and 'dirty bomb' alongside dozens of seemingly innocent words like 'pork', 'cloud', 'team' , 'China'and 'Mexico'.

Released under a freedom of information request, the information sheds new light on how government analysts are instructed to patrol the internet searching for domestic and external threats.

Department chiefs were forced to release the manual following a House hearing over documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit which revealed how analysts monitor social networks and media organisations for comments that 'reflect adversely' on the government.

However they insisted the practice was aimed not at policing the internet for disparaging remarks about the government and signs of general dissent, but to provide awareness of any potential threats.

As well as terrorism, analysts are instructed to search for evidence of unfolding natural disasters, public health threats and serious crimes such as mall/school shootings, major drug busts, illegal immigrant busts.

In a letter to the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Counter-terrorism and Intelligence, the centre described the choice of words as 'broad, vague and ambiguous'.

They point out that it includes 'vast amounts of First Amendment protected speech that is entirely unrelated to the Department of Homeland Security mission to protect the public against terrorism and disasters.'

A senior Homeland Security official told the Huffington Post that the manual 'is a starting point, not the endgame' in maintaining situational awareness of natural and man-made threats and denied that the government was monitoring signs of dissent.

President Barack Obama — pronounced tobacco-free in his latest medical checkup — has tough words for cigarette makers. Some tobacco companies, he says in a new White House web video, are fighting new cigarette warning labels because "they don't want to be honest about the consequences." Obama says the country has made progress in reducing the number of Americans who smoke but notes that 46 million are still addicted.

As she signed the smoking ban bill into law, President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner recalled that after suffering a miscarriage back in 1984 she could not get pregnant for several years, until she stopped smoking in 1988, which helped her conceive her daughter Florencia. She praised the passing of the smoking ban bill which, among other things, completely bans smoking in public venues and in the workplace. “We have to respect other people’s decisions and not involve them in ours, which can be damaging to ourselves and others.”

The captured son of Muammar Gaddafi fretted about the dangers of passive smoking on a plane as a mob on the runway bayed for his blood. He told a group of men as they smoked: "The plane’s sealed and we’ll suffocate. We’re going to choke to death."

China's official PMI in manufacturing sector fell to 50.4, which was lower than 52 expected by economists. It's also just marginally above that key breakeven level of 50.

The American PMI grew faster than expected, offering a positive note amid worries about the state of the economic recovery.

The weak PMI makes an unwanted birthday gift for the Chinese Communist party, which celebrates its 90th anniversary on Friday.

The rise in the PMI surprised many market participants and lifted the pound against the dollar and euro.

A robber in a hurry struck at three banks along a stretch of Kings Highway in Brooklyn in a span of about 30 minutes on Friday afternoon, the police said.

In the first and third robberies, tellers handed over cash to the robber, the police said, but he left empty-handed in the second encounter.

The police do not believe that the man displayed a weapon, though they were still gathering information late Friday afternoon.

The mini-crime wave began at around 2:15 p.m., when the robber entered a branch of the Apple Bank at 1321 Kings Highway. He handed a teller a note, was given some money and left, the police said.

About 15 minutes later, the man walked into a Capital One branch at 1226 Kings Highway, the police said, and handed over a note, but did not get any cash.

About 2:40 p.m., the suspect entered an HSBC bank branch at 1621 Kings Highway. Again, a note was handed over and he obtained some money, the police said.

The robber’s spree shows “a certain amount of perseverance,” said Thomas W. McKenna, a retired first-grade detective with the New York police.

“It’s very unusual for a guy to do three banks in a row, that close together, and to stay in the same area.”

Mr. McKenna added: “He’s looking for a score, there’s no doubt about that. And he’s nonsectarian about which bank he goes to. “Any bank is open play for him.”

The robber was described as Hispanic, about 5-foot-7, and 150 pounds. He wore black pants, a red shirt and a red baseball hat.

Bill Giannopoulos, owner of Madison Florist and Decorators, across Kings Highway from the Apple Bank branch, said he did not realize anything was happening until the street was swarming with police officers and a helicopter was circling overhead.

“It’s scary,” he said. “I don’t know what’s happening in the neighborhood.”

Syria's government banned 17 Western diplomats and its helicopter gunships pounded rebels in a coastal province on Tuesday as President Bashar al-Assad defied international pressure to halt his campaign to crush the uprising against his rule.

The declaration that ambassadors from the United States, Canada, Turkey and several European countries were unwelcome was retaliation for the expulsion of Syrian envoys from their capitals last week, following the massacre of more than 100 civilians by suspected Assad loyalists.

On the battlefront, rebels fought with government forces backed by helicopter gunships in the heaviest clashes in coastal Latakia province since the revolt against Assad's rule broke out 15 months ago.

The clashes in Latakia province were a rare surge of violence in a province outside Syria's usual trail of bloodshed.

Latakia province is home to several towns inhabited by members of the minority Alawite sect, a Shi'ite offshoot to which Assad himself belongs and which has been wary of the mostly Sunni-led uprising.

Alawite:

Sunni:

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the fighting was in mostly Sunni areas in and around the city of Haffeh.

Syrian Observatory for Human Rights:

It was the second day of combat since the rebels declared they would no longer abide by an internationally brokered ceasefire, saying that the government had continued the repression in defiance of United Nations peace observers.

an internationally brokered ceasefire:国际停火协议

United Nations peace observers:

Rebel fighters said nine of their comrades were killed, while the Observatory said two civilians and 22 soldiers were killed.

Activists also reported heavy fire by government forces on the city of Homs, a focal point of the uprising that endured a bloody siege for weeks earlier this year.

The latest developments emphasized the precarious state of a peace plan brokered by Nobel Peace laureate Kofi Annan, who has shuttled between Damascus and other capitals on behalf of the United Nations and Arab League.

behalf of the United Nations and Arab League:联合国-阿盟特使

Foreign governments are still clinging to the plan as the only option for finding a political solution and preventing a wider and bloodier conflict. But with the failure of the ceasefire and Assad's intransigence, it is all but in tatters.

In Jeddah, Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal said Gulf Arab states had begun to lose hope that the peace plan would find a solution.

Gulf Arab states:

The comments are significant as Sunni-ruled Gulf countries have led international efforts to oust Assad, who is allied to their main rival Shi'ite Iran, and have hinted in the past they were willing to arm the rebels.

Nevertheless, Russia and China, Assad's principal defenders on the diplomatic front, said on Tuesday that Annan's efforts should not be abandoned.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao, meeting in Beijing, urged international support for the plan despite calls from Arab and Western states for a tougher response to the bloodshed.

The two countries, permanent members of the U.N. Security Council with the power to veto resolutions, have stymied efforts by Western powers to condemn or call for the removal of Assad.

permanent members of the U.N.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmed Davutoglu criticized mixed messages from the international community and blamed wrangling in the Security Council for the deaths of Syrian civilians.

"There should be a more coherent, one voice by the international community," he said at a World Economic Forum conference in Istanbul on Tuesday.

"Because of the (UNSC) veto power and because of the internal dynamics of the U.N. Security Council permanent members ... the process was delayed and because of that delay...thousands of people are being killed."

(United Nations Security Council)

The United Nations says Assad's forces have killed more than 10,000 people since the uprising against his family's four-decade rule of Syria broke out in March 2011.

Assad says he is fighting to save the country from foreign-backed "terrorists" and will carry out his own reform program. The government says more than 2,700 soldiers or security personnel have been killed by opposition forces.

The sophistication of federal lawmakers' speech patterns is on the decline, with members of Congress now talking, on average, at the level of high school sophomores. According to a new report by the Sunlight Foundation, Congress has fallen by almost a full grade-level since 2005.

The members speaking at the lowest grade levels tend to be freshmen Republicans.

As NPR noted on Monday, "Of the 10 members speaking at the lowest grade level, all but two are freshmen, and every one is a Republican." That measurement is for all speeches since 1996.

Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R-S.C.) clocks in at the lowest grade-level: 7.9 in this Congress.

"I was trained to write in a clear and concise fashion, and you didn't use big words if small words would do," Mulvaney, who graduated with honors from Georgetown and earned a law degree from the University of North Carolina, told NPR. "Certainly I'm not trying to dumb down the message by any stretch of the imagination."

Before 2005, Republicans spoke, on average, at a slightly higher grade level than Democrats. Since then, Democrats have been slightly higher.

Sunlight also found that members of Congress rarely use the 100 most common SAT words, which are likely very familiar to high school students.

The most commonly used SAT word was, ironically, "compromise." It has been used 1,820 times in this Congress as of the end of April. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has used it more than anyone else.

Thank you. President Tilghman. Trustees and Friends. Parents of the Class of 2012. Above all, Members of the Princeton Class of 2012. Give yourself a round of applause. The next time you look around a church and see everyone dressed in black it'll be awkward to cheer. Enjoy the moment.

Thirty years ago I sat where you sat. I must have listened to some older person share his life experience. But I don't remember a word of it. I can't even tell you who spoke. What I do remember, vividly, is graduation. I'm told you're meant to be excited, perhaps even relieved, and maybe all of you are. I wasn't. I was totally outraged. Here I’d gone and given them four of the best years of my life and this is how they thanked me for it. By kicking me out.

At that moment I was sure of only one thing: I was of no possible economic value to the outside world. I'd majored in art history, for a start. Even then this was regarded as an act of insanity. I was almost certainly less prepared for the marketplace than most of you. Yet somehow I have wound up rich and famous. Well, sort of. I'm going to explain, briefly, how that happened. I want you to understand just how mysterious careers can be, before you go out and have one yourself. I graduated from Princeton without ever having published a word of anything, anywhere. I didn't write for the Prince, or for anyone else. But at Princeton, studying art history, I felt the first twinge of literary ambition. It happened while working on my senior thesis. My adviser was a truly gifted professor, an archaeologist named William Childs. The thesis tried to explain how the Italian sculptor Donatello used Greek and Roman sculpture — which is actually totally beside the point, but I've always wanted to tell someone. God knows what Professor Childs actually thought of it, but he helped me to become engrossed. More than engrossed: obsessed. When I handed it in I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life: to write senior theses. Or, to put it differently: to write books.

Then I went to my thesis defense. It was just a few yards from here, in McCormick Hall. I listened and waited for Professor Childs to say how well written my thesis was. He didn't. And so after about 45 minutes I finally said, "So. What did you think of the writing?" "Put it this way" he said. "Never try to make a living at it." And I didn't — not really. I did what everyone does who has no idea what to do with themselves: I went to graduate school. I wrote at nights, without much effect, mainly because I hadn't the first clue what I should write about. One night I was invited to a dinner, where I sat next to the wife of a big shot at a giant Wall Street investment bank, called Salomon Brothers. She more or less forced her husband to give me a job. I knew next to nothing about Salomon Brothers. But Salomon Brothers happened to be where Wall Street was being reinvented—into the place we have all come to know and love. When I got there I was assigned, almost arbitrarily, to the very best job in which to observe the growing madness: they turned me into the house expert on derivatives. A year and a half later Salomon Brothers was handing me a check for hundreds of thousands of dollars to give advice about derivatives to professional investors.

Now I had something to write about: Salomon Brothers. Wall Street had become so unhinged that it was paying recent Princeton graduates who knew nothing about money small fortunes to pretend to be experts about money. I'd stumbled into my next senior thesis. I called up my father. I told him I was going to quit this job that now promised me millions of dollars to write a book for an advance of 40 grand. There was a long pause on the other end of the line. "You might just want to think about that," he said."Why?" "Stay at Salomon Brothers 10 years, make your fortune, and then write your books," he said. I didn't need to think about it. I knew what intellectual passion felt like — because I'd felt it here, at Princeton — and I wanted to feel it again. I was 26 years old. Had I waited until I was 36, I would never have done it. I would have forgotten the feeling.

The book I wrote was called "Liar’s Poker." It sold a million copies. I was 28 years old. I had a career, a little fame, a small fortune and a new life narrative. All of a sudden people were telling me I was born to be a writer. This was absurd. Even I could see there was another, truer narrative, with luck as its theme. What were the odds of being seated at that dinner next to that Salomon Brothers lady? Of landing inside the best Wall Street firm from which to write the story of an age? Of landing in the seat with the best view of the business? Of having parents who didn't disinherit me but instead sighed and said "do it if you must?" Of having had that sense of must kindled inside me by a professor of art history at Princeton? Of having been let into Princeton in the first place? This isn't just false humility. It's false humility with a point. My case illustrates how success is always rationalized. People really don’t like to hear success explained away as luck — especially successful people. As they age, and succeed, people feel their success was somehow inevitable. They don't want to acknowledge the role played by accident in their lives. There is a reason for this: the world does not want to acknowledge it either.

I wrote a book about this, called "Moneyball." It was ostensibly about baseball but was in fact about something else. There are poor teams and rich teams in professional baseball, and they spend radically different sums of money on their players. When I wrote my book the richest team in professional baseball, the New York Yankees, was then spending about $120 million on its 25 players. The poorest team, the Oakland A's, was spending about $30 million. And yet the Oakland team was winning as many games as the Yankees — and more than all the other richer teams.

This isn't supposed to happen. In theory, the rich teams should buy the best players and win all the time. But the Oakland team had figured something out: the rich teams didn't really understand who the best baseball players were. The players were misvalued. And the biggest single reason they were misvalued was that the experts did not pay sufficient attention to the role of luck in baseball success. Players got given credit for things they did that depended on the performance of others: pitchers got paid for winning games, hitters got paid for knocking in runners on base. Players got blamed and credited for events beyond their control. Where balls that got hit happened to land on the field, for example.

Forget baseball, forget sports. Here you had these corporate employees, paid millions of dollars a year. They were doing exactly the same job that people in their business had been doing forever. In front of millions of people, who evaluate their every move. They had statistics attached to everything they did. And yet they were misvalued — because the wider world was blind to their luck.

This had been going on for a century. Right under all of our noses. And no one noticed — until it paid a poor team so well to notice that they could not afford not to notice. And you have to ask: if a professional athlete paid millions of dollars can be misvalued who can't be? If the supposedly pure meritocracy of professional sports can't distinguish between lucky and good, who can?

The "Moneyball" story has practical implications. If you use better data, you can find better values; there are always market inefficiencies to exploit, and so on. But it has a broader and less practical message: don't be deceived by life's outcomes. Life's outcomes, while not entirely random, have a huge amount of luck baked into them. Above all, recognize that if you have had success, you have also had luck — and with luck comes obligation. You owe a debt, and not just to your Gods. You owe a debt to the unlucky.

I make this point because — along with this speech — it is something that will be easy for you to forget.

I now live in Berkeley, California. A few years ago, just a few blocks from my home, a pair of researchers in the Cal psychology department staged an experiment. They began by grabbing students, as lab rats. Then they broke the students into teams, segregated by sex. Three men, or three women, per team. Then they put these teams of three into a room, and arbitrarily assigned one of the three to act as leader. Then they gave them some complicated moral problem to solve: say what should be done about academic cheating, or how to regulate drinking on campus.

Exactly 30 minutes into the problem-solving the researchers interrupted each group. They entered the room bearing a plate of cookies. Four cookies. The team consisted of three people, but there were these four cookies. Every team member obviously got one cookie, but that left a fourth cookie, just sitting there. It should have been awkward. But it wasn't. With incredible consistency the person arbitrarily appointed leader of the group grabbed the fourth cookie, and ate it. Not only ate it, but ate it with gusto: lips smacking, mouth open, drool at the corners of their mouths. In the end all that was left of the extra cookie were crumbs on the leader's shirt.

This leader had performed no special task. He had no special virtue. He'd been chosen at random, 30 minutes earlier. His status was nothing but luck. But it still left him with the sense that the cookie should be his.

This experiment helps to explain Wall Street bonuses and CEO pay, and I'm sure lots of other human behavior. But it also is relevant to new graduates of Princeton University. In a general sort of way you have been appointed the leader of the group. Your appointment may not be entirely arbitrary. But you must sense its arbitrary aspect: you are the lucky few. Lucky in your parents, lucky in your country, lucky that a place like Princeton exists that can take in lucky people, introduce them to other lucky people, and increase their chances of becoming even luckier. Lucky that you live in the richest society the world has ever seen, in a time when no one actually expects you to sacrifice your interests to anything.

All of you have been faced with the extra cookie. All of you will be faced with many more of them. In time you will find it easy to assume that you deserve the extra cookie. For all I know, you may. But you'll be happier, and the world will be better off, if you at least pretend that you don't.

Never forget: In the nation's service. In the service of all nations. Thank you. And good luck.

China's Ministry of Commerce said it had found six US policies that support or subsidize the US renewable energy industry that run counter to World Trade Organization rules, instituted trade barriers and distorted normal trade between the world's two largest economies, said a statement on the ministry's website on Thursday.

China's Ministry of Commerce

World Trade Organization

run counter to 违反

例句:

The nutrition label has become one kind of new technique trade wall gradually.

The Doha Development Round began in Qatar in 2001 with the goal of scrapping trade barriers and subsidies, particularly in agriculture, by 2013.

Reducing barriers to trade is vital as well, since it can create new opportunities for poor countries and poor people.

Mollie Price has become one of the youngest entrepreneurs in the United Kingdom after the six-year-old girl launched her own chain of candy stores, the Shropshire Star reports.

With a little help from her mother, Mollie recently opened her third sweet shop in Welshpool, Wales.

“It might sound crazy but believe me Mollie is the real brains behind the operation. It was Mollie’s idea to set up the shop," the little girl's mother, Becky, told the Sun.

Appropriately called "Mollie's," the candy store specializes in a variety of traditional British sweets and American candy. According to Price, every item in the store is first approved by her hardworking daughter.

“She dictates what we sell and is up at 5am every Sunday ready to go to our wholesale suppliers in Birmingham to restock," Price said. “Once there she very carefully chooses what we buy and what we should and should not stock. She really is very particular -- and it seems to work as we have been incredibly busy since opening our latest store."

Other than being a keen buyer, the elementary school student -- who the Sun has called the "next big business tycoon" -- has also come up with a number of clever business solutions to help boost profits.

“She has some wonderful ideas. For instance, we have two large tin soldiers standing guard at the entrance to our Pride Hill shop which she insisted are called Alfie and George after her two brothers," Price told the Shropshire Star.

“She also came up with the idea of a temperature chart on the wall…so if it’s really cold we sell our Mr Whippy ice creams cheaper than when it’s hot outside. For someone so young I believe that really shows a marvellous business brain.”

According to the Daily Mail, Mollie has plans to expand her candy empire and will one day take over the reins from her mother.

For the time being, however, the little girl will just have to be content with helping the stores improve and expand with her innovative ideas.

“Children have the best ideas. I tell my mum what I think and she always says I have good ideas. It’s just that I know what other children like,” said the pint-sized entrepreneur.

http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMzYzOTUzMDU2.html
A seven year old girl left fighting for life with a brain haemorrhage has awoken from a week-long coma, after her mother sang Adele songs to her.

Little Charlotte Neve had suffered the haemorrhage - extremely rare for someone of her age - in her sleep and it almost killed her and left her unable to see or speak.

Following two operations to stop the bleeding on her brain she was left in a coma fighting for life - and doctors told her mother, Leila, to say her final goodbyes.

But, when Leila, 31, got in the hospital bed to give Charlotte her final cuddle, Adele’s 'Rolling in the Deep' came on the radio - a song the pair used to sing together.

Leila started singing it to her daughter - and Charlotte began to smile - astounding doctors. Within two days, Charlotte - from Trawden, Lancashire - had started speaking, could focus on colours and managed to get up from her bed.

Two months on, she has astonished medics by learning to walk and talk has regained partial sight - and has now even gone back to school and dance classes.

Leila said: 'It’s a complete miracle. Doctors told me to say goodbye and I thought I was going to lose my little girl.

'I climbed into her hospital bed to give her a cuddle - she was wired up to machines and unresponsive - and Adele came on the radio.

'I started singing it to her because she loves her and we used to sing that song together.

'Charlotte started smiling and I couldn’t believe it. It was the first time she had reacted to anything since the haemorrhage. The nurses were astounded and told me to keep singing, and she smiled again.

'The nurses said it was like I ‘unlocked her’ and from that day she started getting better and better.'

Charlotte suffered the haemorrhage on April 13th - following a normal night watching DVDs with her mother and her sister.

She was rushed to Leeds hospital and had to undergo two life saving operations - but doctors didn’t think she would survive.

GENEVA (AP) – To cheers and standing ovations from scientists, the world's biggest atom smasher claimed the discovery of a new subatomic particle Wednesday, calling it "consistent" with the long-sought Higgs boson — popularly known as the "God particle" — that helps explain what gives all matter in the universe size and shape.

"We have now found the missing cornerstone of particle physics," Rolf Heuer, director of the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN), told scientists.

He said the newly discovered subatomic particle is a boson, but he stopped just shy of claiming outright that it is the Higgs boson itself — an extremely fine distinction.

"As a layman, I think we did it," he told the elated crowd. "We have a discovery. We have observed a new particle that is consistent with a Higgs boson."

The Higgs boson, which until now has been a theoretical particle, is seen as the key to understanding why matter has mass, which combines with gravity to give an object weight. The idea is much like gravity and Isaac Newton's discovery of it: Gravity was there all the time before Newton explained it. But now scientists have seen something very much like the Higgs boson and can put that knowledge to further use.

CERN's atom smasher, the $10 billion Large Hadron Collider on the Swiss-French border, has been creating high-energy collisions of protons to investigate dark matter, antimatter and the creation of the universe, which many theorize occurred in a massive explosion known as the Big Bang.

Two independent teams at CERN said Wednesday they have both "observed" a new subatomic particle — a boson. Heuer called it "most probably a Higgs boson, but we have to find out what kind of Higgs boson it is. "

Asked whether the find is a discovery, Heuer answered, "As a layman, I think we have it. But as a scientist, I have to say, "'What do we have?'"

"It is consistent with a Higgs boson as is needed for the standard model," Heuer said. "We can only call it a Higgs boson — not the Higgs boson."

The leaders of the two CERN teams — Joe Incandela, head of CMS with 2,100 scientists, and Fabiola Gianotti, head of ATLAS with 3,000 scientists — each presented in complicated scientific terms what was essentially extremely strong evidence of a new particle.

Incandela said it was too soon to say definitively whether it is the "standard model" Higgs that Scottish physicist Peter Higgs and others predicted in the 1960s — part of a standard model theory of physics involving an energy field where particles interact with a key particle, the Higgs boson.

The phrase "God particle" was coined by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Leon Lederman but is used by laymen, not physicists, as an easier way of explaining how the subatomic universe works and got started.

Singer Susan Boyle has received an honorary doctorate for her contribution to the creative industries. She was honoured by Edinburgh's Queen Margaret University, where she studied for a certificate in caring.

The degree is for work in society at large, which the university said reflected its commitment to the communities it serves. It was presented to the West Lothian star by founding chancellor Sir Tom Farmer.

Brought up in Blackburn, Boyle made her name on ITV's Britain's Got Talent in 2009. One YouTube clip of the performance where she sang I Dreamed A Dream, from the musical Les Miserables, has had 21.5 million hits. Her first album in 2009, I Dreamed A Dream, was at the time the fastest-selling debut album ever.

With the release of two further albums, Boyle has since sold about 18 million albums worldwide and has 120 platinum and gold albums across 38 countries. She has sung on TV in the UK, the US, Australia, Ireland and Japan, and performed for Pope Benedict XVI and the Queen. The singer also performed live to half a billion people on the TV show China's Got Talent.

Many of us would be happy to pay for the privilege of hearing Susan Boyle sing. So you would think her neighbours might be pleased to enjoy her musical talents for free. They, however, seem less than delighted, claiming her early morning arias are ‘unbearable’.

Now Teresa Miller, 39, and her friend Paul Keaveney, 44, have submitted an official complaint to the council saying the noise prevents them from hearing their own TV. Mother-of-two Miss Miller, who lives next to Miss Boyle in Blackburn, West Lothian, claimed the star regularly belted out covers of Wild Horses and Unchained Melody as well as I Dreamed a Dream – the song that propelled her to fame. She said: ‘We used to hear the odd bit of shouting and sometimes singing before she was famous but since she became successful she’s got worse. It is so loud you can’t hear the telly. It’s unbearable sometimes.

Susan Boyle still lives in her old house, left, next door to Teresa Miller who says the millionaire singer keeps singing along to her own tunes so loudly she cannot hear her own television.

A woman who became Britain's youngest mother after a one night stand at the age of 12 says she had no regrets about becoming a teen mum.

In fact, Amy Crowhurst advocates having children early as she admits that at the age of 22 she now has 'the freedom to meet mates and go clubbing when my mum babysits.'

Amy, who is on benefits and lives in a council house, told this week's Closer magazine: 'Having kids young was the smartest thing I ever did.'

She added: 'When I see girls I went to school with having babies now, I’m so glad I got it out of the way. They’ll be at home and up in the night for the next 10 years. Plus they’re fat and I’m a size 6! I missed school, but I can catch up – and I’ll appreciate it more.'

Amy fell pregnant in 2002 when she was just 12-years-old after having sex with a 15-year-old boy she barely knew. She gave birth to son, Alfie, when she was 13 and dropped out of school to care for him. She said at the time: 'I know I was stupid but I'm not that bothered. Of course I wish it had never happened but it's too late now.'

At the age of 16, she moved out of the home she shared with her mum and eight siblings in Crawley, West Sussex, to a council flat of her own.

Although she hadn't been in a relationship with Alfie's father since her son was born, they then had a 'one-off' reconciliation in 2005 - which led to her falling pregnant again. At the age of 16 she gave birth to daughter Destiny.
Destiny.

She didn't remain in contact with her children's father and admits for a period she struggled to cope as a single mum.

This led to her getting in trouble with the law as she was found in possession of cannabis in 2009 - for which she was sentenced to a community order - and then evicted from her council home in 2010 for throwing 'wild drug-fuelled parties'.

When she pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis, she told the court she had taken it to get away from the stress of parenthood and forget about everyday life.

Despite this, Amy tells Closer she wouldn't mind if her own daughter became a teen mother. She said: 'Having sex at 12 is fine if you feel ready and aren’t pressured. I wouldn’t encourage Destiny to plan pregnancy at 12, but if she did have a baby I’d be happy – it’d be fun being a gran at 27!'

Amy told the magazine she now has her life back on track. She and her children, now aged nine and seven, are living in a three bedroom council house and she is returning to college to get her GCSEs with ambitions of becoming a healthcare worker.

She believes she's a better mum for having had children early as she has lots of energy and can relate to her off-spring because they are closer in age.

Did this woman really love her mummy or was she just interested in cashing his Social Security checks?

That question is one of many surrounding an investigation launched by Jackson, Mich. police after they discovered Charles Williams Zigler's mummified remains inside the house of his alleged girlfriend, Linda Chase, 72, on July 6.

Chase insisted to Michigan Live that, while she did cash Zigler's Social Security checks after he died, she kept him around, not for his money, but for the pleasure of his company.
[/cn]

Chase and police also disagree on the nature of the pair's relationship. The cops say the two were boyfriend and girlfriend, but Chase insists they weren't.

"It's not that I'm heartless. It's just that after so many bad things happen to you, I don't know," Chase told Michigan Live while wiping away tears. "I didn't want to be alone. He was the only guy who was ever nice to me."

Chase says Zigler died a few months ago, but Jackson Police spokesperson Chris Simpson told The Huffington Post that Zigler likely passed away around Christmas time in 2010.

No one disputes that Zigler, who was in his 60s, died of natural causes, but Simpson said his department is looking into charging Chase with financial fraud.

"The investigation is ongoing," Simpson said. "We're talking with a local prosecutor and hopefully we can get some charges soon."

Simpson said police were called after Zigler's family members hadn't heard from him "for a long period of time."

Japan's current account surplus continued to narrow and machinery orders fell more than expected in May, as the global slowdown weighed on the nation's economic recovery. Government data released Monday showed the current account surplus dropped 62.6% from a year earlier to ¥215.1 billion ($2.7 billion).

1. economic recovery

2. balance of international payments

3. credit balance

4. deficit 逆差

例句:

Each year, with a current account surplus of about 3 per cent of GDP, it adds to its claims on foreign assets.

Monetary policy seems to be too loose for the good of China because of the large current account surplus.

At a fixed exchange rate, a current account surplus not offset by a corresponding voluntary capital outflow will generate an increase in the monetary base.

She has written several successful comedies, and was the first Chinese person to produce a complete Chinese version of Don Quixote from the Spanish original.

After graduating from Soochow University in 1932, Yang Jiang enrolled in the graduate school of Tsinghua University where she met her husband Qian Zhongshu. During 1935~1938, they went to Oxford and University of London for further study. At that time, they had their daughter Qian Yuan. They returned to China in 1938. Both Yang and Qian went to academics and made important contribuions to the development of Chinese culture.

Don Quixote, fully titled The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha (Spanish: El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha), is a novel written by Miguel de Cervantes. The novel follows the adventures of Alonso Quijano, who reads too many chivalric novels, and sets out to revive chivalry under the name of Don Quixote. He recruits a simple farmer, Sancho Panza, as his squire, who frequently deals with Don Quixote's rhetorical orations on antiquated knighthood with a unique Earthy wit. He is met by the world as it is, initiating themes like intertextuality, realism, metatheatre and literary representation.

号称“微利(meager profit)”的它们,究竟是不是赔本(sell sth at a loss)赚吆喝?

This road looks set to be the most expensive motorists have ever driven on in the UK.

Located in central London,  is one of the key routes for competitors and officials looking to get to the Olympic Stadium.

But just when motorists thought the designated Olympic lanes couldn't get any more confusing, they face an even harder time working out how to drive along here.

As this picture shows, motorists travelling along Southampton Row face three options - and all are illegal.

They can either travel in the bus lane, the Olympic lane or on the wrong side of the road.

Obviously no driver would want to travel on the wrong side of the road. But motorists caught travelling in either a bus lane or Olympic lane during operational hours face a £130 fine.

The Olympic lanes are part of the Olympic Route Network which is a series of roads linking all competition venues and other key sites. It is hoped they will ensure that all athletes and officials get to events on time.

But the new regulations led to confusion on the A4 and the A40, where Olympic driving restrictions are yet to come into force.

Pictures showed motorists battling to get out of the lanes as traffic queued to enter the capital.

Charging began on the M4 today because the first athletes were arriving in London to prepare for the Games, which start on July 27.

The traffic problems were first reported by Sky News to be on the M4, but further enquiries established that the tailback images it broadcast were from the A4.

Ironically, the Highways Agency said few problems were reported on the M4 itself.

'As we get closer to the Games roads will become exceptionally busy and our advice to motorists is clear – avoid driving in central London, around the ORN and Games venues but if a journey is absolutely essential be sure to plan ahead by visiting get ahead of the games.com and allow extra time.'

'Motorists are heeding that advice and we have already seen a 10 per cent reduction in traffic levels in central London.'

The 8,000 volunteers who will welcome international visitors to London 2012 have been issued with a 66-page instruction manual, covering everything from foreign etiquette to uniform care and advice on dealing with journalists. But what of the visitors themselves? Could they not do with a manual outlining the customs, manners and practicalities of the islands they are visiting? We hereby present a simple guide to UK etiquette for the 2012 Olympics.

Welcome, and before we begin – please accept our apologies. Your four-hour nightmare wait at passport control should not be taken as a symptom of Britain's contempt for foreigners. It is merely a symptom of a woeful lack of spending on a key aspect of travel infrastructure in the run-up to a hugely important event. In other words, it's the government that hates you. Don't worry, they hate us too.

Canadians: I'm afraid that while you are here you will be repeatedly mistaken for Americans and blamed for all sorts of stuff you had nothing to do with. Unless you can think of a quick and simple way to distinguish yourselves at a glance – flower in lapel? Saddle shoes? Maple leaf eyepatch? – then you are just going to have to suck it up.

Americans: While you're here, why not pretend to be Canadian? Very few Britons can tell the difference, and it will allow you to rescue yourself from awkward conversations about the death penalty.

1. Under no circumstances should you ask your taxi driver how excited he is about having the Olympics in London this summer. It's not that he will be reluctant or embarrassed to offer a personal opinion on the matter. That is not the problem at all.

2. Nobody here can answer any questions you have about fencing. Google it.

3. Pay no attention to those bow-tied etiquette experts you sometimes see on CNN International, telling you how to behave while in Britain. These people are generally of dubious provenance, normally live in California and tend to peddle advice that is either irrelevant or out of date. For example, they will often say that Britons love queuing and are so fond of apologising that they will often say "sorry" even when something isn't their fault. In reality, Britons are just as likely to jump to the front of a queue and then punch the person behind them for coughing. It all depends on how muggy it is.

4. British people may seem to apologise a lot, but it doesn't quite mean the same thing here. In the UK, "I'm sorry" actually means either a) I didn't hear you; b) I didn't understand you; or c) I both heard and understood you, and I think you're an idiot.

5. Britons love bleak[/w] humour: that's why all the hire bikes are branded with the name of a bank currently being investigated for fixing interest rates. It's supposed to be funny.

6. London's bike hire scheme couldn't be simpler, by the way: just go up to the terminal at any docking station, pay by card and take away one of our so-called "Boris bikes". When you're done with it, simply throw it into the nearest canal. They're disposable!

7. Do not ask a policeman the best way to get to the West End or how to use an Oyster card. He wants to help, but he's from the West Midlands.

8. Please aid the Olympic authorities and organisers by demonstrating at all times that you are not a terrorist. Do not perspire, take off your shoes, smile in a weird way while texting someone, or point and shout: "Hey! Look at all those missiles on that roof over there!" In fact, if you're not using your hands for anything, it's probably best if you keep them in the air where everybody can see them.

9. We here in the UK want nothing more than to provide you, our guests, with a fantastic experience this summer, combining the best in international sport, brilliant facilities, fantastic entertainment and a cultural legacy that draws on centuries of excellence in art and architecture. If you ended up with four tickets for the wrestling at the ExCel Centre, well, better luck next time.

Andrew Stanton has signed on to direct a sequel to Pixar's Finding Nemo.

The filmmaker, who was responsible for the original movie, most recently helmed the box office flop John Carter, which starred Taylor Kitsch as a Civil War soldier who finds himself on Mars.

The movie was Stanton's first foray into live action moviemaking, after award-winning turns on Wall-E and Finding Nemo.

While John Carter proved to be a financial disappointment, Finding Nemo is Pixar's second-highest-grossing movie ever behind Toy Story 3.

Ellen DeGeneres, Albert Brooks and Willem Dafoe provided voice work for the original Finding Nemo, which won the Academy Award for 'Best Animated Film'.

Little is known about the plot of the upcoming sequel, although Deadline reports that executives at both Pixar and Disney are thrilled with Stanton's concept for the follow-up.

With the Presidential race heating up, it makes you wonder what it takes to be a President.

Are there any special qualities that are required? Is it better to know your strengths or your weaknesses? Or both? Irrespective of whether you want to run for Presidency one day, there are specific traits that every man should have. They are:

1. Respect for others

You should respect everyone, irrespective of their stature in the society. Then, be it the CEO of a company or a waiter at a restaurant, every human being has as much right to respect and dignity as everyone else.

2. Patience to wait it out

Patience is one of the key traits for success. It’s like fishing. You ought to be ready to wait it out, to let the fish come to you, rather than grabbing at it. If you’re patient enough, you will probably snag the biggest one in the ocean.

3. Progressiveness

Have an open mind. Don’t surround yourself with yes men. Always look for challenges and be ready to face them. It’s only when you are challenged enough is when you do your best.

4. Passion to take it all the way

All ideas, great ones especially, will draw criticism initially. There will be people who will just not get on board. But these are the times when you have to keep your chin up and remain enthusiastic.

5. Accept your mistakes

Always be ready to accept your mistakes. All great men are capable of doing that. Be the bigger man and apologise for your follies.

6. Compassion for others

Don’t be quick to judge others. Consider where they are coming from. If you think someone has made a statement that sounds silly, doesn’t always mean that the person is dumb. It could also mean he is not aware yet. Just give people some time before you take a call on their character.

7. Modesty

No matter how rich or famous you become, always be modest. The day you stop being humble, you’d be automatically down the road that will lead to your downfall.

8. Involvement
投入

Whatever you do, be involved in that process. If you work in an office, know the names of everyone on your team. Keep a tab on everything that is going around you.

9. Initiative

Be someone who gets out there and gets things done. People always respect those who take initiative. Always talk about things you want to accomplish than resting on your past laurels.

10. Tact

To avoid long-term damage you need to be tactful. If someone calls you an ugly name in public, you need to deal with him diplomatically without creating a scene. Avoid conflicts for as long as you can.

The People's Bank of China, the country's central bank, said now is the time for the country to establish a deposit insurance system. That announcement came as part of an official report that was released over the weekend and is a strong indicator that the long-awaited system will be introduced soon.

1. The People's Bank of China

2. official report

3. financial guarantee institution

4. policy holders 投保人

5. bank credit

6. financial order

And banks can fund their expanded asset base because at the same time deposits are attracted into the banks by the comfort of deposit insurance.

Outside the US, deposit insurance system is rarely complete and there are usually delays before reliable cheques denominated in central bank money duly arrive.

The implicit deposit insurance system can not meet the demand of financial stability and development under market economy.

As many of you know, early on Friday, at least twelve people were killed when a gunman opened fire at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. Dozens more are being treated for injuries at local hospitals. Some of the victims are being treated at a children's hospital.

We are still gathering all the facts about what happened, but we do know that the police have one suspect in custody. And the federal government stands ready to do everything necessary to bring whoever's responsible for this heinous crime to justice. We will take every step possible to ensure the safety of all our people. And we will stand by our neighbors in Colorado during this extraordinarily difficult time.

Even as we come to learn how this happened and who's responsible, we may never understand what leads anyone to terrorize their fellow human beings. Such evil is senseless – beyond reason. But while we will never know fully what causes someone to take the life of another, we do know what makes that life worth living.

The people we lost in Aurora loved, and were loved. They were mothers and fathers; husbands and wives; sisters and brothers; sons and daughters; friends and neighbors. They had hopes for the future and dreams that were not yet fulfilled. And if there's anything to take away from this tragedy, it's a reminder that life is fragile. Our time here is limited and it is precious. And what matters in the end are not the small and trivial things which often consume our lives. It's how we choose to treat one another, and love one another. It's what we do on a daily basis to give our lives meaning and to give our lives purpose. That's what matters. That's why we're here.

I'm sure many of you who are parents had the same reaction I did when you first heard this news: what if it had been my daughters at the theater, doing what young children enjoy doing every day? Michelle and I will be fortunate enough to hug our girls a little tighter this weekend, as I'm sure you will do with your children. But for those parents who may not be so fortunate, we need to embrace them and let them know we will be there for them as a nation.

This weekend I hope everyone takes some time for prayer and reflection – for the victims of this terrible tragedy, for the people who knew them and loved them, for those who are still struggling to recover, and for all the victims of the less publicized acts of violence that plague our communities on a daily basis. Let us keep all these Americans in our prayers. And to the people of Aurora, may the Lord bring you comfort and healing in the hard days to come.

Most parents would do anything to help their children succeed in school, but one Weisenberg Township mother took it too far, Lehigh County authorities say.

Catherine Venusto, a former Northwestern Lehigh School District employee, used her knowledge of the district's computer system — and the superintendent's password — to change her children's grades, state police said.

Her daughter went from a failing grade to a medical exception, according to court records, and her son went from a grade of 98 percent to an even more impressive 99 percent.

When state police detectives interviewed Venusto, 45, at her home last Thursday, she admitted changing the grades and also admitted using the superintendent's passwords to gain access to district emails and personnel files, according to court records.

Venusto said she logged on to the district's computer system, even after she had left her job as a secretary for the district, out of "curiosity and boredom," according to court records.

On Wednesday, Venusto's curiosity got her charged with three counts each of unlawful use of a computer and computer trespassing, all third-degree felonies. She was arraigned before District Judge Robert C. Halal and released on $30,000 unsecured bail.

Authorities say Venusto used the superintendent's information from Aug, 23, 2010, to February 2012 to gain access to the district's human resources system, which contained thousands of files associated with district policy, contract information, employee reports and personnel information.

Authorities also say she entered the district's email system by using the passwords of the superintendent and nine other district employees.

The investigation began on Feb. 24, 2012, when Assistant Superintendent Jennifer Holman reported that a former employee allegedly accessed the district's computer system using the superintendent's sign-in and password information, authorities said.

District officials had earlier suspected something was wrong when a high school principal called to report that some teachers were concerned that the superintendent was accessing the grading system to look at their grades.

Northwestern Lehigh Superintendent Mary Ann Wright said she was sick to her stomach when that call came in asking if she had been viewing student grades.

In fact, Wright never logged into students' grades.

The February 2012 call, Wright said, triggered an immediate shutdown of the computer system. That month, district officials tightened security and log-in procedures, but didn't detail the new measures that were put in place.

After years of growing at a breakneck speed of around 9%, the Indian economy is running out of steam and the manufacturing sector is suffering.

External problems like the crisis in Europe, plus domestic troubles like inflation, are hurting manufacturers, forcing some to shut up shop, scale back - or in some cases, start manufacturing in China.

Ashish Saraf is CFO of Technocraft Industries. His factory outside Mumbai makes yarn, cotton, clothes and engineering equipment. Almost everything is exported so Saraf keeps a close eye on exchange rates, watching as the rupee slid about 25% versus the dollar over the past year.

Usually, when the rupee weakens, Indian exports become cheaper, so buyers overseas order more. But that’s not the case for Saraf because, he explains, the European crisis has completely wiped out demand for his goods.

Faced with similar problems, manufacturing companies across India are shutting down or scaling back.

Narendra Thakkar is finding it hard to staff his garment manufacturing unit. He says laborers want higher wages, because they're paying more for everything from food to fuel. And if they don't get that higher wage, they're going back to their villages where the cost of living is cheaper.

Inflation is also driving up the cost of raw materials at a time when demand is slow.

“It's because investments have stopped,” said Satish Jamdar, of the Confederation of Indian Industry. “Investments in long-term projects have stopped. We need to fuel this, give some impetus to infrastructure.

“I have seen all great nations that came up and started growing; in the beginning, initial development came from spending on infrastructure. Then manufacturing kicks in, services kick in. That's what we require.”

The slowdown in manufacturing is affecting overall growth and India's economy is currently growing at its slowest in almost a decade. Disillusioned with the state of the economy, Saraf set up a manufacturing facility in China, where he makes engineering equipment.

“In China, the benefit primarily was the raw material cost,” he said. “The overall cost of production in China is much lower.”

1. industrial and commercial administration 工商局

2. sample v.

3. batch n. 批次
例:different batches of a product 不同批次产品

4. customer-service worker

5. pull sth off shelves 下架
例:pull the milk powder off shelves 将奶粉下架

PE Credit Tree Climbing

Our PE credit courses are offered three times per semester in Ithaca, New York, and once a year in Costa Rica. Taught in a group setting, these courses cover the basics of tree hazard assessment, line placement, ascending, descending and moving around in the canopy. We visit several locations around the areas, sampling a few different environments and tree species. A much anticipated highlight of our local and international courses is the tree overnight. We have the option of camping out on our tree platforms or sleeping suspended in hammocks between branches of the same tree! All equipment is included in the course fee.

Newspapers reflect on the deadly floods in Beijing which killed 37 people, forced tens of thousands to evacuate and left many stranded at transport hubs around the capital.

China Daily says millions of people were hit by the heaviest rainstorm in 61 years, causing losses of at least 10bn yuan ($1.57bn; £1bn), according to the Beijing municipal government.

People's Daily focuses on the positive side, citing cases in which Beijing citizens tried to help each other out of danger.

The Beijing Times reports the municipal government has promised to withdraw all traffic tickets issued to cars abandoned during the floods, after traffic wardens' acts were heavily criticized by netizens.

Regional newspapers such as Shanghai's China Business News criticized Beijing's drainage systems, especially the fact that many underpasses along major routes were inundated.

The chief executive of G4S admitted that his management of the London Olympics staffing scandal had embarrassed the British government and left the world's biggest security group's reputation in tatters as he fought to save his job on Tuesday.

The chief executive:首席执行官(CEO)

reputation in tatters:声誉扫地

G4S has been at the centre of a political firestorm that has wiped $1.1 billion (703.59 million pounds) off its market value since it announced that it could not provide the promised 10,400 security guards only two weeks before the Games.

a political firestorm:政治风暴

security guards:保安

Shares in the group closed down 5.7 per cent after Chief Executive Nick Buckles appeared before a parliamentary committee, struggling to answer several questions and saying he wished he had never taken on the Olympics contract.

Shares in the group:

At one point, when asked whether his staff would be able to speak fluent English, he responded that he did not know what fluent English was.

After being assured that he was speaking English himself, Buckles went on to say that the group still expected to take its 57 million pound management fee from the Games.

management fee:管理费

G4S has said that it could lose up to 50 million pounds on the Olympics security contract, worth 284 million pounds.

The embarrassing staffing admission has ignited a wider row over the British government's decision to outsource key work to the private sector and left ministers from the Prime Minister down trying to explain how the failure was allowed to develop.

ignited a wider row over:引起广泛的争论

"Many would take the view that the reputation of the company is in tatters," Buckles was told by one member of the Home Affairs Select Committee after being summoned at short notice to explain the debacle.

take the view:持某种观点

"I think, at the moment, I would have to agree with you," Buckles said, looking uncomfortable and sitting ramrod straight before lawmakers in the ornate wood-panelled room.

"We have had a fantastic track record of service delivery over many years in many countries, but clearly this is not a good position to be in," he added.

The debacle has overshadowed the build-up to the Games only 10 days before the world's biggest sporting event begins, reviving memories of previous embarrassments for the company, such as a string of prisoner escapes and riots.

a string of:一连串的

Last year the group left inmates locked up for almost 24 hours at a British jail after losing the keys to cells. In another incident, guards tagged a man's false leg, allowing him to remove it and break a court-imposed curfew.

locked up:关押

"Certainly my view, and the view of the board, is I'm the best person at the moment to take this through," Buckles insisted.

As a crowd of policemen and bystanders looked on nervously, Huang spoke to the man, who was distraught over fights he was having with his 18-year-old daughter as well as financial struggles.

Relating his own family’s experience, Huang urged the man, who is in his 30s, to look to the future and think of his daughter getting married and meeting his grandchildren, police said.

Huang was shouting to the man from the roadside which is 10 -15feet from the beam. If Huang came any closer, the man threatened to jump into the water about 400 feet below, police said.

Officers closed down the bridge, which connects Staten Island to Brooklyn, as the hours-long negotiations continued. Shortly after 4.30pm as a thunderstorm threatened, the man decided to let officers rescue him from the ledge.

He was uninjured but taken to Staten Island University Hospital for a check up, according to NYPD.

Huang moved to Manhattan's Chinatown when he was four-years-old and now patrols the streets in the 5th Precinct.

The iPhone 5 will ship to eager Apple fans on Friday, September 21, according to sources close to Apple.

A Chinese source leaked the release date to a French website called App4Phone yesterday, providing the specific date.

The source also confirmed the new controversial port on the base of the phone, which will make older accessories obsolete unless a separate adapter is purchased.

We all know the phone as the 'iPhone 5', unless Apple decides on another moniker like it did with the iPad 3, which it officially called 'the new iPad'.

Other revelations include the headphone socket moving from the top-left of the phone to the bottom-left of the phone, and that the screen will be 3.75 inches.

This is an increase on the 3.5" of previous models, but perhaps smaller than some fans might like, after being introduced to the 4.8" screens of models like the Samsung Galaxy III or the HTC One X.

The source was an unnamed Chinese accessory manufacturer, who claimed to have been given the date directly from Apple. So far, leaks from within Apple have suggested an October launch.

The new iPhone will have an even thinner screen thanks to advances in LCD manufacturing, according to reports.

Tech blogs have long speculated on the demise of the 30-pin connector, which at 21 mm wide takes up a chunk of space, especially as the latest technologies such as microUSB offer more power in less space.

They say that a smaller connector would give Apple more scope for new product designs or a bigger battery, or simply to make ever smaller products.

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are one of our favorite celebrity couples. We’ve loved watching them in love, on-screen and off, so much that this latest news on their relationship is devastating: Kristen allegedly cheated on Rob.

People reports that Kristen, 22, had a “brief fling” with Rupert Sanders, the married director of her recent film Snow White and the Huntsman. “Kristen is absolutely devastated,” a source tells the magazine. “It was a mistake and a complete lapse in judgement.”

“She wasn’t having an affair with Rupert. It was just a fleeting moment that shouldn’t have happened. She never meant to hurt anyone. She’s a good person who just made a bad choice,” the source says. The source alleges that the tryst occurred not when Kristen and Rupert were filming, but recently.

In a separate report, Us Weekly claims the encounter happened July 17 in Los Angeles. According to them, the two were caught by photographers in what is being referred to as a “marathon make out session.” One photographer told the magazine, “It seemed like they couldn’t get enough.”

Rupert, 41, who is married to British Vogue model Liberty Ross, 33, has two children, ages 7 and 5.

Filming on Snow White and the Huntsman began in August of 2011 and wrapped in December, with the film having been released this past May. We have to wonder if this is something that began months ago, when Kristen and Rupert were working together for those four months, or if it truly is a recent development, as People claims.

Rob and Kristen have been together for the past four years, since meeting each other on the set of the first Twilight film. The two even live together. While we don’t know Kristen’s stance on cheating, Rob has been very vocal about how he’s against cheating, even saying how he doesn’t understand it.

Batman star Christian Bale visited survivors of the Colorado theater shooting Tuesday and stopped by a makeshift memorial to victims of the attack that killed 12 people and injured 58.

Carey Rottman, one of those injured in Friday's shooting at a theater showing "The Dark Knight Rises," posted two photos of himself with Bale on his Facebook page. Hospital staff also posted a Facebook photo of the actor with some staff members.

An online campaign had urged Bale to visit survivors of the shooting.

After visiting The Medical Center of Aurora, Bale stopped by a makeshift memorial to the victims near the movie theater. He walked among the 12 crosses erected for each of the slain victims, and many people there didn't realize who he was or chose to leave him alone.

A Warner Bros. spokeswoman told The Denver Post that Bale was representing himself, not the movie studio.

Bale, who stars as Batman in "The Dark Knight Rises," previously issued a written statement saying: "Words cannot express the horror that I feel. I cannot begin to truly understand the pain and grief of the victims and their loved ones, but my heart goes out to them."

Twelve people are dead and up to 50 injured in a Denver suburb after a masked gunman opened fire at a late-night screening of the new Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises.

Witnesses speaking to the local KOA radio station said the gunman was wearing a gas mask and had released a smoke or teargas bomb before the shooting started. One witness described to CNN a "guy slowly making his way up the stairs and firing, picking random people".

Olympic swimming: China's Sun Chang beats rival Park to gold

Sun Yang became the first Chinese male swimmer to earn gold as he won the 400m freestyle with an Olympic record.

Sun overhauled South Korean rival Park Tae-hwan, who had been reinstated into the final after being disqualified for a false start in his morning heat.

Defending champion Park had led for most of the race before Sun overtook him just after the final turn and went on to win.

Peter Vanderkaay was third, with Great Britain's David Carry, 30, in seventh.

Carry is the oldest member of Team GB's swimming squad and said: "What a feeling. I can't believe it.

"A year ago I set myself the target of reaching the Olympic final. There have been some rocky patches. To have this awesome support behind me was fantastic."

Sun was on world record pace in the final 50 metres and, although he narrowly missed out on that mark, he did break Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe's Olympic record.

Chinese star, 16, breaks 400m IM world record

Ye, 16, set a new world best of four minutes 28.43 seconds, ahead of American world champion Elizabeth Beisel and fellow Chinese Li Xuanxu.

The 16-year-old overwhelmed American world champion Elizabeth Beisel to win the final in four minutes 28.43 seconds to cap a glittering night for China in the pool following Sun Yang's breakthrough victory in the men's 400m freestyle.

Ye put in a storming final freestyle leg to shatter the previous record of 4:29.45, set by Australian Stephanie Rice en route to gold at the Beijing Games four years ago.

So supercharged was Ye's finish that she stormed under the world record on the back of a 28.93sec final lap to leave her rivals in her wake.

"I thought at the 200 metres that the race was lost," Ye said. "But then on the breaststroke I realised I was in the top two or three and I was confident I could win on the last leg.

"I've been working on my butterfly and backstroke since last year's world championships and have closed the gap, while freestyle is my best stroke. I dreamed of winning the gold medal, but I never ever expected to break a world record, I'm overwhelmed."

I've always known my father was an important man. He is, after all, the president of the United States. But the other day, as I was running around on the playground, a thought suddenly occurred to me, a horrible realization that stopped me dead in my tracks: There are people out there who want to kill my dad. My dad. The man who is raising me, who asks me how school is every day, who takes me to soccer games and reads me stories when I can't fall asleep at night. People want to murder him. They want to murder my father.

Doesn't really get more fucked up than that, now, does it?

When we first moved into the White House I was only 7 years old, too young to know that people wanted my dad dead. And I'll tell you what, I was a lot happier then. Now that I'm a little older, though, it's all becoming pretty clear. There aren't just four or five people who want my dad dead. Tons of people want to murder him. Tons. People in this country, people in other countries. The bottom line—and this is the cold, hard reality that I now fully understand—is that every second of every day, people are thinking of ways to kill the person I love and admire more than anyone in the world.

Meanwhile, no one is plotting the murder of, say, my friend Amanda's dad. He's a computer technician. No one is trying to assassinate a computer technician. At no point in Amanda's day will she experience a rush of crippling panic due to the fact that, at any moment, a psycho wielding a semiautomatic weapon could step out of the shadows and unload an entire clip into her father's chest, killing him right on the spot.

That's just true. You can try to comfort me all you want, but you know damn well that's just a fact.

Here's another awful thing I've finally started to understand: The chances of somebody killing my father are so high that there is an entire force of men and women whose singular responsibility is to prevent that from happening. These people are specially trained. They create intricate plans specifically designed to protect my father, because no matter where he goes, somebody in the area probably wants to kill him. And look, I'm not some naïve little girl anymore. I can get on the Internet. I can research American presidents. I know damn well the Secret Service doesn't always succeed. Ronald Reagan almost died, and he had a daughter just like me.

Also, I know exactly who John F. Kennedy is now. And I know exactly what happened to him.

So, as this was all starting to sink in—and I was pretty shocked, as you can probably imagine—it occurred to me that I have my own Secret Service detail, which means there are also people who want me dead. They want me, an 11-year-old little girl, dead. Same goes for my mom and big sister. I mean, shit, they want to kill my whole family.

And you want to know what the worst part is? I have no idea where my dad is right now. I haven’t seen him all day. For all I know, he could be waving to a crowd of supporters at this very moment while some guy on a rooftop 2,000 feet away has his head in the scope of a high-powered rifle, just waiting for the perfect moment to splatter his brains all over the stage.

Put yourself in my shoes for a second. Imagine you’re standing next to your dad, holding his hand and smiling, when all of a sudden a bullet pierces through his skull and drenches your sundress in blood.

Seriously, do you have any idea how messed up that is?

And I’m not operating under the misconception that all these people are going to get caught someday or just eventually give up. The most depressing thing is this will be going on for the rest of my life. Twenty years from now, when I’m living far away and have kids of my own, I could get a call from my mom with the news that Dad is dead. That he was blown to bits by a bomb in his car, and that they just barely found enough charred remains to identify the body.

Well, great. I'm glad I finally figured all that out. Here's to a wonderful life, Sasha. I guess I'll just go outside now and play without a goddamn care in the whole fucked-up world.

Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing has done something unusual among his CEO counterparts. Yuanqing distributed his $3 million bonus among the company's 10,000 lower level workers. The rewards averaged out at 2,000 yuan, or $314, which is slightly less than a month's salary for many workers in China's technology manufacturing plants.

This is an amazing gesture and gives us hope that there are still good CEOs out there who are doing their job for the benefit of the company not for their own personal gain.

Eight badminton players have been disqualified from the doubles after being accused of "not using one's best efforts to win".

Two pairs from South Korea and one each from China and Indonesia made a series of basic errors in Tuesday's matches.

All four pairs were accused of wanting to lose in an attempt to manipulate the draw for the knockout stage.

Indonesia and South Korea have appealed and a decision is expected before Wednesday's quarter-finals at 1900 BST.

The Badminton World Federation met on Wednesday morning to discuss the case. As well as the "not using best efforts" charge, the players were also accused of "conducting oneself in a manner that is clearly abusive or detrimental to the sport".

Teams had blamed the introduction of a round-robin stage rather than a straight knockout tournament as the catalyst. In the round-robin format, losing one game can lead to an easier match-up in the next round.

In the first women's doubles match at Wembley Arena on Tuesday night, fans jeered China's Yu Yang and Wang Xiaoli and South Koreans Jung Kyung-eun and Kim Ha-na .

The longest rally in the first game lasted four shots, with match referee Thorsten Berg coming on to the court at one point to warn the players.

South Korea won the Group A match, which lasted 23 minutes, 21-14 21-11.

Both pairs were already through to the quarter-finals, with the winners to face China's Tian Quing and Zhao Yunlei. The two Chinese pairings could have only met in the final following the results in the final group game.
